The Blues for The Blues
 | Somerset Captains –v- Oxford Captains
Mendip Spring played host to this fixture and both Captains teams could not have been looked after any better had they been booked into a five star golfing complex in Dubai. The weather was equally as warm, the course was in pristine condition, thank you green staff, the food was excellent and the staff provided a first class service. If you have not visited Mendip Spring Golf Club or played either of their courses for a while then please do.
This was the 39th meeting between the two County Captain’s sides stretching back to 1969 when Somerset won the inaugural match at Saltford Golf Club and since then all matches have been fairly and evenly contested. Many long and lasting friendships have been struck over this period together with many new ones that I know will keep this fixture in good stead for many more years to come.

The Capains Party
 | | After a light lunch it was the Captains Party that lead the way with Colin Davies, Captain of Somerset Captains, and playing partner, Eric Porter, Host Captain, playing against Graham Dixon-Brown, Captain of Oxford Captains, and playing partner Bruce Butcher. This was closely contested throughout with the odd short putt lipping out and the 15 footer dropping in and both camps were happy that this game finished all square. |
Match 2
 | John Vernon and Frank Ryan, representing Somerset were not quite so generous to their opponents Roger Sillence and Graham Fullager of Oxford. They put in an early burst of good shots to go four up but credit to the Oxford duo who fought back to be only one down for a while before John chipped in on the 16th Green to restore a more comfortable lead and Frank put the game safe by winning the 17th.
Match now 1½ to ½ in favour of Somerset. |
Match 3
 | Match three had local man Bob Acland and Tony Hoskings, Somerset, playing David Jones and Mick Jefferies, Oxford, involved in a game that never had more than one hole in it throughout most of the time but the home team, two up playing the 17th, lost it but managed to hold on to win on up on the 18th green. David playing off a 6 handicap played some excellent approach shots but found the difference in shots made all the difference in the outcome of the game.
Match now 2½ to ½ in favour of Somerset.
Match 4
 | Match four saw John Perkins and John Chillington of Somerset playing another 6 handicap player in Alan McKechnie and Mike Mogeridge of Oxford and this game followed a very similar pattern to the previous game with the home team being one up for most of the round but the visiting duo managed to square the match on the 18th.
Match now 3 to 1 in favour of Somerset.
Match 5
 | Match five was well contested by Mike Snaith and Mike Nash of Somerset playing Martin Hawkins, off 6, and Richard Green of Oxford. The Somerset duo were one up after 14 holes and appeared to be in control when I caught up with them but sadly for them they started spraying the ball all over the place, now completely out of control and finally went down to the triumphant Oxford pairing.
Match now 3 to 2 in favour of Somerset.
Match 6
 | Match six had David White and David Roberts of Somerset up against Mike Sibley and Theo Ziffo of Oxford and after a steady start that was evenly poised the Somerset pair produced a sudden burst and won a handful of holes to go five up after eight. That more or less put the game out of reach for the Oxford duo but they put up sterling resistance right through to the end.
Match now 4 to 2 in favour of Somerset.
Match 7
 | Match seven and Nigel Cheshire and Brian Rideout of Somerset entered into battle against Stuart Gibbs and Mike Tuckwell of Oxford. All drove well for the first few holes, in fact, Mike, playing off 15, was only 20 yards short of green with his tee shot on the third hole. Although the home side held on to being one up for much of the game they were eventually pulled back to finish all square at the 18th.
Match now 4½to 2½ in favour of Somerset.
Match 8
 | Match eight saw David Twigg playing and local man David Rich, Somerset, against Mike Lewis and Stuart Sinclaire of Oxford but local knowledge didn’t count for much today as the visitors got their act together and ran out comfortable winners.
Match Result. 4½ to 3½ in favour of Somerset.
After 39 meetings the overall results stand at Somerset 16, Oxford 19, and 4 halved.
