The Sauce of Somerset
 | This match was hosted by Fulford Heath Golf Club, a parkland course at Wythall, just off the A435. Considering all the rain that has fallen in the area over recent days the course was in excellent condition and well presented by the green staff who were congratulated by both Captains in their after dinner speeches and applauded by all Captains. Throughout the games the rain was threatening with really black clouds hovering overhead but thankfully they came to nothing, in fact, the sun broke through and provided a perfect end to the days play.
This course, although not long, provides a stiff test to golfers of all standards as there are trees popping up every time your ball comes off the club face so placing the ball in the right place on the fairways does bring about the best results. The par threes with drop holes, elevated green over a lake and well guarded greens also pose questions and demand careful shot making.
Throughout our visit we were treated most courteously by the Staff who were forever smiling, which is great to see in young people today. Well done Gemma, Tracey, Becky, Harriett and Cara who all contributed much to the enjoyment of our visit with those big smiles and all appeared to be enjoying their work.
This was the sixth meeting between Worcestershire Captains and Somerset Captains and this meeting followed similar lines to the others in as much as it was conducted in a friendly spirit with the usual good humoured banter and camaraderie that is enjoyed by all Captains who take part in these matches. Long may that continue.

The Captains Party
 | In the frame are Clive Woods, George Davies, Brian Peplow and Colin Davies. The Captains got the match under way with Colin Davis, Captain of Somerset Captains leading the way along with George Davies playing against Brian Peplow, Captains of Worcestershire Captains, and partner Clive Woods. Brian has been out of action for a while having damaged his shoulder but he and Clive put up sterling resistance before losing 3 & 2 to the Somerset duo.
Running Score is:- Worcestershire 0 – 1 Somerset
|
|
Match Two
 | In the frame are Max Putnam, Charles Harrison, Trevor Jenkins and John Blundell. Match two saw the pairing of Trevor Jenkins, Somerset Captains Secretary, and partner Max Putnam, get off to a flying start with two pars from the former followed by three birdies from the latter to put them four up after five holes. It didn’t get any better for John Blundell and Charles Harrison, Worcestershire Captains, as they fell further behind to be six down at the turn. All this as a result of local man John who was very helpful in telling the Somerset duo where to place their tee shots, luckily, they did just that and went on to win the 10th hole too. At dormy seven a spirited fight back was needed and John provided the answer using his shot on the 12th hole to keep it at dormy six but it was unlucky 13th for John and Charles as it was all over on that hole. This game was played in great humour and enjoyed by all four players.
Running Score is:- Worcestershire 0 – 2 Somerset
|
|
Match Three
 | In the frame are Barry Lake, Paul Hucker, Richard Moyes and Bob Smalley.
Match three paired Barry Lake and Paul Hucker for Somerset against Richard Moyes and Bob Smalley for Worcestershire and although nothing much in the game early on it was the Somerset pair who managed to get on top in the latter stages and went on to win comfortably.
Running Score is:- Worcestershire 0 – 3 Somerset
|
|
Match Four
 | In the frame are Eric Church, Jerry Suenson-Taylor, John Bevan and Bill Robinson.
Match four put Jerry Suenson-Taylor and Eric Church together for Somerset against John Bevan, Secretary of Worcestershire Captains, and partner Bill Robinson and this match followed a similar pattern to the last game although the winning margin was not so large as the Somerset duo ran out 2 & 1 winners.
Running Score is:- Worcestershire 0 – 4 Somerset
|
|
Match Five
 | In the frame are Malcolm Jeffs, Mervyn Slocombe, David Andow and Brian Coleman.
Match five and David Andow and Mervyn Slocombe represented Somerset Captains but they came up against an in form pairing of Malcolm Jeffs and Brian Coleman of Worcestershire Captains who ran out comfortable winners by 5 & 3 to reduce the overall match deficit.
Running Score is:- Worcestershire 1 – 4 Somerset
|
|
Match Six
 | In the frame are Jim Hurley, Bryn Harrington, Brian Reeves and Rob Hirons.
Match six had Brian Reeves and Rob Hirons playing for Somerset Captains against Jim Hurley and Bryn Harrington representing Worcestershire Captains and although the Somerset duo got off to a flying start being 5 up at the turn they lost the next five holes and found themselves pegged back to all square after 14. However, the Somerset duo managed to get their act together again and finally won their game 2 & 1.
Running Score is:- Worcestershire 1 – 5 Somerset
|
|
Match Seven
 | In the frame are Bill Hawker, John Eastoe, John Scott and Vic Brisbourne.
Match seven was always going to Worcestershire Captains. Vic Brisbourne was sinking everything from both on and off the greens and, sad to say, you could only stand back and admire the quality of his golf. No real surprise then that the two Somerset players could not match his skills and they were on the wrong end of a 6 & 4 defeat.
Running Score is:- Worcestershire 2 – 5 Somerset
|
|
Match Eight
 | In the frame are Phil Hall, Eddie Westmorland, Mike Usher-Clark and Ian Jones.
Match eight provided another success for the home side as both Phil and Ian got the better of the Somerset duo of Mike and Eddie by 5 & 3. Again this match was played in a superb spirit throughout.
Final Result was:- Worcestershire 3 – 5 Somerset

Approaching the 2nd Green.
 | | To the right of the 2nd fairway there were two Black Swans enjoying the water feature. |
|
Black Swan
 | | This poor swan had only one leg but he still posed a threat if you came too close to him. |
|
The 11th Hole
 | | This was a delightful drop hole of 136 yards par three off the yellow tee. |
|
The 12th Hole
 | | This dog leg 12th hole was not long but the winding stream to the right, the bank of trees to the left and off the end of the fairway meant the tee shot had to be spot on to stand any chance of making par. |
|
The 16th Hole
 | | What a challenge this hole was. Only 155 yard par three but it was all carry over a lake and onto the elevated green. Here is a picture looking back down to the tee from the 16th green, with match seven waiting to tee off. |
|
From The 16th Tee
 | | This is what you see from the 16th Tee. I don't know how often the lifebouy gets used but it really is a useful addition to the hole. |
|
The 18th Green
 | | Match seven finishing off their round. |
|
The Toast is .......
 | | To Fulford Heath Golf Club and its Staff... CHEERS.. |
|
Two Happy Bar Staff
 | | In the frame are Gemma and Tracey who looked after the refreshments and quenched our thirsts in the best possible way. They were two very charming ladies. |
|
Three of a Kind
 | These three young ladies, Harriett, Cara and Becky, looked after the table service very efficiently with smiling faces and were extremely polite at all times.
Along with Gemma and Tracey they were a credit to Fulford Heath Golf Club. Well done young Ladies. |
|
The Two Secretaries
 | | Trevor Jenkins and John Bevan, Somerset and Worcestershire respectively, enjoy a few moments reflecting upon the success of this sixth meeting between the two County Captain's teams. |
|
The Trophy Presentation
 | This is a rare event for Somerset Captains to be receiving the Trophy from Worcestershire Captains as Somerset won it in the first year but Worcestershire won it for the last four years.
Here Brian Peplow passes it on to Colin Davies for safe keeping. |
|
Worcestershire Juniors Triumph
 | Proud members of Fulford Heath Golf Club surround a Junior member of Fulford Heath Golf Club receiving the Midland Counties Junior Championship "Sallis Salver" from Brian Peplow, Captains of Worcestershire Captains, and on his left is Dusty Rhodes, Club Captain Fulford Heath Golf Club.
This Trophy was presented at the Club as three Fulford Heath G.C. Juniors represented the County in this Annual Event.
Captains from both Worcestershire and Somerset congratulated the Club on their achievement.
