Well I'm Blowed
 | Weston-s-Mare Golf Club were again the hosts for this the ninth Annual Meeting between the teams and we were treated most royally by all the staff both on and off the course. The course was in pristine condition and looking as good as it has ever been. Well done Weston-s-Mare green staff for the progress made in recent times.
What a day it turned out to be. Several players, including myself, were all in favour of selling the golf clubs and buying kites as the wind was about a fierce as it could have been and it was going to be one heck of a task keeping your feet firmly planted on terra firma let alone hitting the golf ball to the desired position. It continued to test the players for most of their round although it did ease up a little towards the end. Thank goodness it did not bring with it any rain so we were at least able to complete the match without getting wet.

The Captains Party
 | In the frame are David Twigg and Colin Davies, Captain of Somerset Captains, Graham Yates and Jim Scott, SGU Executive Committee.
The first match got under way with Colin Davies, Captain of Somerset Captains, and partner, David Twigg, Weston-s-Mare Club Captain, keeping the pressure on Jim Scott and Graham Yates playing for the SGU. The Somerset duo went two up only to be pulled back to all square on a couple of occasions but from being dormy two up they could only manage to halve their game.
Running Score : Somerset ½ SGU ½

Match Two
 | In the frame are Charlie Carr, President of Somerset Captains, Dennis Longden, SGU, John Perkins, Somerset Captains, and John Hurcombe, SGU.
Match two had Charlie Carr, President of Somerset Captains, and partner John Perkins, playing against Dennis Longden and John Hurcombe for the SGU. This was keenly contested throughout but the SGU duo finally ran out winning by 3 & 2.
Running Score : Somerset ½ SGU 1½

Match Three
 | In the frame are Adrian Deakins and Rick Metcalfe, SGU Executive, Brian Reeves and Brian Crosby, Somerset Captains.
Match Three saw the pairing of Brian Reeves and Brian Crosby up against Rick Metcalfe and Adrian Deakins for the SGU. The Somerset duo, both tall fellows, struggled in the wind and it was no surprise that the two dumpy lads from the SGU managed to chalk up another win.
Running Score : Somerset ½ SGU 2½

|
Match Four
 | In the frame are Derek Hughes, SGU, Tony Hoskings and Trevor Hicks, Somerset Captains, and Barrie Lake, SGU Executive.
Match Four was always going to test the SGU pair of Barrie Lake and Derek Hughes up against Trevor Hicks and Tony Hoskings for Somerset Captains who quickly went into a three up lead. They managed to hold on to this lead to win 3 & 2 and keep the match alive.
Running Score : Somerset 1½ SGU 2½

Match Five.
 | In the frame are Derek Hanson, SGU, Trevor Jenkins Somerset Captains, Alan King, SGU, and Mick Bovingdon, Somerset Captains.
Match Five was a game of two halves if ever there was one. The SGU pairing of Alan King and Derek Hanson raced into a lead and were three up at the turn mainly as a result of some indifferent putting from the Somerset Captains Secretary, Trevor Jenkins and partner Mick Bovingdon. At the turn the tables were turned and Somerset Captains managed to get it back to all square on a couple of occasions but then gave away the very next hole. However, at dormy one down the Somerset duo managed to win the 18th to finally produce half which was the right result in this most enjoyable match.
Final Score : Somerset 2 SGU 3

The Presentation
 | After a few welcoming words from the host Captain, David Twigg, the Captain of the SGU team, Rick Metcalfe offered his congratulations to those concerned with organising the days event. He went on to say that it had been, yet again, one of the best and that the Course was indeed as good as it has ever been.
In response, Colin Davies, Captains of Somerset Captains, endorsed those thoughts from Rick and asked the Somerset Captains to stand and take wine with the SGU Executive Committee Team.
The event was concluded with the trophy, donated by Ken Hinchliffe and Rick Metcalfe, being presented to the winning Captain. |
