Coast To Coast
 | Burnham & Berrow Golf Club played host to this fixture and, apart from a mild breeze, it was a perfect day for all concerned. The Captains of both Somerset and South Wales Coast were treated very well by an enthusiastic staff both on and off the course and the Dinner that followed the golf was excellent in quality, quantity and presentation so congratulations to the two ladies in the kitchen, Eve and Mandy, and well done Phillipa and Vicki who waited on the tables. The bar manager David and assistant Peter were equally obliging and we thank them all for their contribution towards the success of the day.
As mentioned, the wind played quite a part in the games throughout the eighteen holes and coupled with being punished when the ball left the fairways it was never going to be easy. We can be thankful though that we were not troubled by rain at all, in fact, the sun shone through most of the afternoon.
Club Captain, Geoff Sloman, who joined us for Dinner, hoped all Captains had enjoyed their visit to Burnham & Berrow Golf Club, hoped that many present would return and bring along a friend or two and wished everyone a safe journey home.
Both Captains, in their after dinner speeches, thanked Burnham & Berrow Golf Club for hosting this match between Somerset Golf Captains and South Wales Coast Captains and praised the green staff on the presentation of the course, the warmth of the hospitality and the quality of the food.

The Captains Party
 | In the frame are David Kent, Somerset Captains, Jonathan Jones, Captain of Sourth Wales Coast Captains, Colin Davies, Captain of Somerset Captains, and Terry Townsend, of the South Wales Coast Captains.
This game went very much in favour of the Somerset pair right from the start with Colin Davies and David Kent keeping the ball in play and Jonathan Jones and Terry Townsend struggling to do likewise. It was no surprise to find the home duo ending their game with a 4 & 3 win.
Running Score: Somerset 1 - 0 South Wales Coast
|
|
Match Two
 | In the frame are Mike Nash and John Andrew for Somerset Captains and Tony Brown and Mike Davies for South Wales Coast Captains.
John Andrew and Mike Nash, found the South Wales Coast duo of Mike Davies and Tony Brown in good form and were never really in contention as the visitors strolled away to win 5 and 3.
Running Score: Somerset 1 - 1 South Wales Coast
|
|
Match Three
 | In the frame are Mike Blackman, South Wales Coast Captains, George Matthews and George Davies for Somerset Captains, and John Glidden of South Wales Coast Captains.
The Somerset pair of George Davies and George Matthews were involved in an excellent battle against Mike Blackman and John Gidden of South Wales Coast with some good golf played by both pairs. However it was the visitors who finally won the game one up.
Running Score: Somerset 1 - 2 South Wales Coast
|
|
Match Four
 | In the frame are Peter Swann and Ron Jamieson for Somerset Captains, either side of Tony Perkins and Eric Howells of South Wales Coast Captains.
The Somerset pairing were up against two really competitive players in Eric Howells and Tony Perkins of South Wales Coast and what a ding dong battle this turned out to be. Never more than a hole in it throughout but it was the Somerset duo of Peter and Ron who managed to get on top to win 1 up and to square the match.
Running Score: Somerset 2 - 2 South Wales Coast
|
|
Match Five
 | In the frame are Trevor Jenkins and Gordon Britton represented Somerset Captains and flanking Brian Joseph and Ron Holland of South Wales Coast.
The visitors won the first hole but it was back to all square all after the second. It remained well contested for a few holes but then the home pair opened up a four hole lead at the turn. This was too much for the visitors to pull back although they reduced the arrears on the tenth hole but then lost the 11th and 12th to go five down. The game was far from over as Brian won the 13th, 14th and 15th with pars to cut the lead back to 2 down with three to play. This spurred Gordon into action and he birdied the 16th to close the game out at 3 & 2 to Somerset.
Running Score: Somerset 3 - 2 South Wales Coast
|
|
Match Six
 | In the frame are Ben Gliddon for Somerset Captains, Dilwyn Bull for South Wales Coast Captains, David White, Somerset Captains and Brian Rowlands, South Wales Coast Captains.
David White and Ben Gliddon were up against it for much of the first nine holes as Brian Rowlands and Dilwyn Bull coped well in the windy conditions but it was the home side, holding on to a one hole lead for much of the back nine who eventually ran out winning 2 up.
Running Score: Somerset 4 - 2 South Wales Coast
|
|
Match Seven
 | In the frame are John Hughes, South Wales Coast Captains, Bill Hawker, Somerset Captains, Jeff Hanney, South Wales Coast Captains and Clive Wright, Somerset Captains.
Clive Wright and Bill Hawker for Somerset were giving Jeff Hanney and John Hughes a run for their money in a match that saw the Somerset duo come back from being five down but finally losing it on the 18th being 1 down.
Running Score: Somerset 4 - 3 South Wales Coast
|
|
Match Eight
 | In the frame are John Williams and Bob Smith playing for Somerset Captains up against a strong pairing of Graham Cogbill and Rodney Kidd for South Wales Coast Captains.
This turned out to be quite a game with neither pair giving the other an opening an easy passage. The visitors managed to be one up playing the last but the Somerset duo hit back to win the 18th and therefore halve their game and give Somerset the overall match.
Final Result: Somerset 4½ - 3½ South Wales Coast
