Reaching The Heights
 | Driving through torrential rain and a sky covered in black clouds had us all wondering whether this annual match between the South West Region Secretaries and Somerset Golf Captains at Staddon Heights Golf Club would go ahead on Tuesday 17th July. How wrong we were…
On arrival we were warmly welcomed by Tim Aggett, Club Secretary. The sun was shining and it shone for the rest of the day, it was warm and got warmer as the day went on, with only a very light breeze and not one spot of rain. It was as if we had arrived in another Country such was the change in the weather. If asked, we could not have picked a more pleasurable day to play the course.
Thanks must firstly go to the Green Staff who presented the course in excellent condition, well manicured, well defined fairways and really true greens and a good test of golf. Our thanks also go to the Catering Staff for the fine food they provided and to the Bar Staff who also looked after us so well. Well done all of you.
Somerset Captains also wish to thank the members of Staddon Heights Golf Club for allowing us to play the Course.
Staddon Heights Golf Course must provide the most scenic views you could ever wish to see and from just about every part of the course. They are spectacular and well worth the visit just to take them in.

The Captains Party
 | In the frame are Bob Brownhill and Colin Davies, Somerset Captains, with Richard Marston and Tim Aggett, South West Region Secretaries.
Colin Davies, Captains of Somerset Captains, along with Bob Brownhill, got the match under way against Richard Marston, Captain of South West Regional Secretaries, and big hitting Tim Aggett and it was the home duo who went two up after three. This was like red rag to a bull for the Captains as Colin then hit six pars on the trot, getting shots from Tim on five of those holes, and this was enough to put the Captains three up at the turn.
Bob then got in on the act and kept the pressure on by holing a few putts to see the Captains home by 3 & 2.
Running Score: S.W. Reg. Secretaries 0 - 1 Somerset Captains
|
|
Match 2
 | In the frame are Mike Nash and George Davis, Somerset Captains, either side of Ian Watkins and Trevor Reynolds of South West Region Secretaries.
George and Mike for the Captains, came under the cosh from the start of their game against Secretaries, Ian and Trevor. Although well in contention for short periods it was the stronger pairing of the Secretaries duo who ran out 4 & 3 winners.
Running Score: S.W. Reg. Secretaries 1 - 1 Somerset Captains

|
Match 3
 | In the frame are Rex Ladd, Somerset Captains, Jim Cunning, SW Region Secretaries, Brian Reeves, Captains and Mike Wake, Secretaries.
Never much to choose between these two pairings of Brian and Rex for the Captains, and Mike and Jim for the Secretaries. Plenty of good golf played, long drives, close chips and long putts holed, especially by Mike, but at the last hole the Captains let a one up lead slip away. Brian hit his tee shot into the practice area and Rex managed to three putt the tricky 18th Green to finish all square.
Running Score: S.W. Reg. Secretaries 1½ - 1½ Somerset Captains
|
|
Match 4
 | In the frame are Chris Liberty and Clive Downer, Somerset Captains, either side of Mike Penlington and Roy Smith, South West Region Secretaries.
How did the Captains pairing of Clive and Chris let this game slip away from them. Up against big Mike Penlington and Roy Smith for the Secretaries, they were in with a chance but golf is a funny game and even the best laid plans can fall apart. The Secretaries took the game 2 & 1.
Running Score: S.W. Reg. Secretaries 2½ - 1½ Somerset Captains
|
|
Match 5
 | In the frame are Murray Parsons & Peter Swann, Somerset Captains, with Stuart Phipps & Bob Knight for South West Region Secretaries.
Time for the Captains pairing of Murray and Peter to get their act together and they certainly did just that against Bob and Stuart for the Secretaries, by winning the first three holes and never looking back. The Captains duo eventually won this game by 7 & 5.
Running Score: S.W. Reg. Secretaries 2½ - 2½ Somerset Captains
|
|
Match 6
 | In the frame are Terry MacFarlane, Somerset Captains, Derek Watts SW Region Secretaries, Richard Birch, Captains and Mike Burns, Secretaries.
Richard Birch and Terry MacFarlane for the Captains had slightly the worst of it from Mike Burns and Derek Watts for the Secretaries. However, I think the views and the heat favoured the home pair who managed to eke out a win for the Secretaries.
Running Score: S.W. Reg. Secretaries 3½ - 2½ Somerset Captains
|
|
Match 7
 | In the frame are Duncan Hughes and Tim Blackwood, Somerset Captains, Brian Rimes and Charlie Carr, South West Region Secretaries.
I really do not know where to start with this report but I will try and simplify it… if I can. Charlie Carr, Captains President, golfer extraordinaire, was subject to transfer talks prior to play commencing and we eventually rallied round and found £1.35p to move him over to the Secretaries side. They grabbed it with both hands. (We would have given more had we been pushed.)
Now we have Charlie playing with Brian Rimes, Secretaries Secretary, against Duncan Hughes and Tim Blackwood for the Captains and we were never going to get anything out of this game as team policy dictates that you do not upset the President. Needless to say the Secretaries won this game and Charlie has a lot to answer for at our next AGM in October.
Running Score: S.W. Reg. Secretaries 4½ - 2½ Somerset Captains
|
|
Match 8
 | In the frame are Bernard Starkey, South West Region Secretaries, Trevor Jenkins, Somerset Captains Secretary, Brian Carnie, Secretaries and Denis Compton, Captains.
What a quick start the Captains pairing of Trevor Jenkins and Denis Compton made going three up after four holes and not letting the duo of Secretaries, Brian Carnie and Bernard Starkey, receiving 8 and 14 shots respectively, get back at them, much as they tried. It was a most enjoyable game, lots of good golf and played in an excellent spirit. A little one sided as the Captains pair ran out 7 & 6 winners.
Final Score: S.W. Reg. Secretaries 4½ - 3½ Somerset Captains

These Two Know the Score
 | Trevor Jenkins let Mike Penlington in on a little ruse he was playing on his opposite number, Brian Rimes, who fell for it hook, line and sinker.
Trevor had kidded Brian that the Secretaries still held the Trophy. Brian meanwhile had found the box for it at home. At presentation time Brian even invited Trevor to present the empty box to the winning Captain but he did not notice that the Trophy had by now been put safely into the box. As Trevor produced the Trophy from the box right under Brian's nose the look on Brian's face was worth a millions dollars. Well done Brian, it was great fun and we could all see the funny side of it, including yourself. Thanks for a great day at Staddon Heights Golf Club. |

More Happy Eaters
 | | Just a few more Captains and Secretaries enjoying the banter. |
|
Never Over Until The Paperwork Is Done.
 | Charlie Carr, President of Somerset Captains, on his feet trying to explain to the Somerset Captains how he managed to sink the winning putt to win the match for the Secretaries.I think we should ask the South West Region Secretaries for our £1.35p back.
He was later presented with a copy of the Staddon Heights Golf Club Centenary Book by Tim Aggett, Club Secretary who is standing alongside Charlie. The Somerset Captain of Captains and the Captains Secretary were also delighted to receive a copy of the book. |
|
Trophy Presentation
 | Here we have Colin Davies, Captain of Somerset Captains, presenting Richard Marston, Captain of South West Region Secretaries, with the Trophy that mysteriously appeared out of the blue.
Both Captains paid tribute to the great camaraderie that prevails at these meetings and were not holding back in their appreciation of the work done by the two Secretaries in getting this fixture off the ground.
They asked Tim Aggett, Club Secretary, to pass on to the Committee of Staddon Heights Golf Club the gratitude of both camps for the hospitality shown to everyone, for the quality of the food and for the excellent condition of the golf course.
Wine was taken and each were wished a safe journey home. |
