All Swell at Wells
 | This was yet another occasion when Wells Golf Club hosted this illustrious match between their Club Captains and the Somerset Golf Captains and nothing changes either from the hospitality extended to all, the condition of the course or the quality of the food. Wait a minute, that is not correct, in fact, everything about the day had changed so let me put the record straight …... The welcome was great, the course has never been in a better condition and the catering was superb. Thank you Wells Golf Club for giving the Somerset Captains such a memorable meeting.
The match started off in a light drizzle but by the time Alan Shore and his party teed off, you’ve guessed it, the sun came out and it turned out to be a very pleasant, warm day with little if any breeze. There were one or two Captains on both sides who caught a cold out on the course but it was nothing physical.

Have at You Sir
 | | Although competitive this meeting has always engendered a good friendly outlook although that was not altogether obvious from the photograph as the two Past Presidents, Trevor Holman and Ken Hinchliffe, prepared to do battle on the first tee. They agreed a half on the first tee and then fought like tigers for the rest of the round. |
The Captains Party
 | In the frame are Ken Bell, Somerset Captains, Tony Cope and Colin Davis, Captains of Wells Captains and Somerset Captains respectively, and Adrian Lawrence, Wells Captains. The hosts were not giving too much encouragement to their opponents, outdriving them off the first tee by some 60 yards and not taking their foot off the peddle for much of the game. Tony managed to upset any momentum for the Somerset duo by coming in on nearly three holes but that was enough to see the home team run out winning 3 & 2.
Running score: Somerset Captains 0 - 1 Wells Captains
Match 2
 | In the frame are Steve Clark and Raymond Smith, Wells Captains, and John Vernon and Mike Dawson, Somerset Captains. This match followed very much the same pattern as the Captains party in that the home pair got off to a good start and kept it up to record a win by 3 & 2.
Running score: Somerset Captains 0 - 2 Wells Captains
Match 3
 | In the frame are Ian Pamplin, Somerset Captains, George Ellis and Jerry Suenson-Taylor, Wells Captains, and Mike Newell. This is a long standing encounter between Ian and George, with the latter always managing to find a way of upstaging his opponent and today was no exception for just as the Somerset duo were about to putt for the win on the 18th green George managed to get to Ian’s ball first, pick it up and offer the half. This sounds a fair gesture until you realise that the Wells duo were one down at the time.
Running score: Somerset Captains 0½ - 2½ Wells Captains
Match 4
 | In the frame are Trevor Jenkins, Secretary of Somerset Captains, Alan Shore and George Davis, Wells Captains and Steve Williams, Somerset Captains. What a ding dong battle this turned out to be after George, on the 1st tee, had declared a £1 on the game and 10p for birdies. With the Wells duo winning the first two odd holes and the Somerset duo winning the 2nd hole all seemed well as the 5th was halved to par. Trevor then birdied the 6th and 7th to put Somerset Captains one up, lost his ball on the 8th, put his second shot in the bunker at the 9th but Steve rolled a huge putt down the green to birdie the 9th to extend the lead for Somerset. Alan came to life on the 10th hole to half the hole then George won the 11th with a four. The 12th went to the Somerset duo but George hit back on the 13th. Somerset still one up, 14th and 15th were halved, Steve then birdied the 16th and a par three at the 17th was enough to give the Somerset pair the win by 2 & 1. I am still waiting to fill in my bank slip for the £1.40p but I have a very understanding Bank Manager.
Running score: Somerset Captains 1½ - 2½ Wells Captains
Match 5
 | In the frame are Rob Ford and Jim Worsley, Somerset Captains, with Richard Birch and Kevin Squire of Wells Captains. Another good contest but at the end of the round it was the Wells Captains who managed to edge out the Somerset Captains.
Running score: Somerset Captains 1½ - 3½ Wells Captains
Match 6
 | In the frame are Eric Loxton, Wells Captains, Jim Hobday and Bill Savage, Somerset Captains, and Colin Genge, Wells Captains. This game had everything including a remarkable comeback from the Somerset Captains duo. Standing on the 15th tee 3 down and four to play it looked all over a win for the Wells pair of Eric and Colin but Jim and Bill never threw in the towel, in fact, they did just the opposite by winning the last four holes to record a classic win for Somerset Captains. The Wells duo were gobsmacked.
Running score: Somerset Captains 2½ - 3½ Wells Captains
Match 7
 | In the frame are Jan Nicholls, Wells Captains, Dougie Woods and Bill Hawker, Somerset Captains and Eddie Westmorland, Wells Captains. A game of three halves, I am told, Somerset 1 up after nine, dormy 2 down standing on the 17th tee then winning the final two holes to square the match. Great effort by all concerned and a well earned half.
Final Result: Somerset Captains 3 - 4 Wells Captains
