Rev Thomas Howells of the County of Monmouth
 | In the month of June 1857 Rev Thomas Howells of the County of Monmouth paid a visit to this place and after preaching for some time to the Church and Congregation then assembling here for Divine worship they gave him an invitation to become their Pastor and leader in Ministerial duties, the which after a prayerful consideration he accepted and held the pastoral office for 28 years. In February 1885 on the 10th day of that month he resigned his office at a publick meeting convened for the purpose, the pastor experiencing himself not equal to the fullfilling of Ministerial duties. The resignation was received at this meeting and a paper in relation to Church and Pastor was read by Mr William Cooper which paper was forwarded to The Revd RT Verrall, Memorial Hall, London when the following answer was received.
"I have read with verry much interest and pleasure the enclosed, which to me is a pleasing termination to a life of quiet excellent service and I venture to congratulate you all on the good feeling exhibited"
About this time Mr Howells received the promise of £20 .0 .0 per year through the Rev RT Verrall from the Pastors' Retiring Fund which he ultimately received. There was also collected through the efforts of Mr EJ Hoddinott, Mr W Cooper and Miss RA Rawlings the sum of £22 .0 .0 and presented to him as a small tribute of regard. As to the results arising from the late Union of Pastor and People for 28 years, so far it is left for the righteous adjustment of the great day which is before us. The ex Pastor believes that day to be verry near us. The ex Pastor has for years given his thoughts to prayerful consideration of the approaching day of Christ Jesus and takeing of the light given him, he finds himself on the right way. that he is to watch and pray always, that he may be accounted worthy to escape the things that are to come on the face of the earth and to stand before the Son of Man. |
