W & YDMES Railway Track

Our track is one of the hidden gems of the Model Engineering world. On enclosed and secure land at the edge of Westland Airfield, it is a 1200 ft circuit railway track with 2.5, 3.5 and 5-inch gauge rails on a raised wall. We have the usual steaming-up bays, power and water, two store sheds with some workshop facilities, a clubhouse, and plenty of all-weather car parking. Around this fine site are a mixture of grass, shrubs, trees, and some nearly impenetrable jungle with a badger sett. Because of our link to the Westland Leisure Complex, and apart from on our short track at Yeovil Junction, we seldom need to become involved in commercial passenger hauling in the way many Clubs have to, and when we do it then as often as not it’s because we enjoy it in small measure. Mostly we just run steam engines for fun. Where are we? Beyond the front entrance to the main Leisure Complex building the road continues up a slope and through a gate to an enclosed allotment area. Follow the track onwards to the next gate, then up the next slope and you’re there. The gates will be unlocked on meeting days, but please close them behind you so as to keep the rabbits from eating the lettuces and things.
