British Aikido Board Controversy
The British Aikido Board the so called governing body for UK Aikido have damaged the true history of Aikido in the UK from its introduction in 1955 by the legendary Budo master Kenshiro Abbe sensei.
Henry Ellis a direct student of Abbe sensei from the 1950's had a dojo in Slough,Berks, in 1968. at this time a new and immediate beginner joined in the name of Jack Poole, as sensei Ellis was a 3rd dan at this time I think that we can safely assume that he would have noticed if this man had any previous experience in the martial arts, it was obvious that he did not, as a 8mm film of Mr Poole from that time proves. Henry Ellis asked the British Aikido Board to investigate claims by Mr Poole to have started Aikido in 1952, after all!, the BAB did send out a poster on behalf of Mr Poole in the year 2000 inviting all aikidoists including me to a seminar to celebrate his """""""47""""" years of Aikido. the BAB refused to investigate Mr Pooles claims, rejecting my offer of witness statements, many photos, video, and a little commen sense, the BAB then bizarrely presented Mr Poole with a bronze samurai statue to ratify his claims. If Mr Pooles claims are to be believed then this would dramatically alter the history of British Aikido.
1/ The BAB sent out Mr Pooles "flyer" to all BAB members knowing full well that his claims were untrue.
2/ The BAB refused all evidence against Mr Poole, Ms Timms the BAB secretary has never returned a photo of Mr Poole from 1968 that I loaned her.
3/ For two and a half years the BAB refued to answer any of my letters on this subject.
4/ When corressponding with me on other matters within the BAB, Ms Timms never put my name on the title just leaving it blank, she did not sign any of the letters either, leaving them blank, a very professional secretarial attitude?.
5/ When I tried to raise this matter at a BAB meeeting , the then BAB chairman Toni Davis refused me my rights as a BAB member and Principal coach to speak, the chairman then deliberatley lied to all attending members, stating that there was another group waiting to use the hall, as there were no other groups outside the hall I checked with reception, and was informed that there were no other bookings for that room that day.
6, When making the presentation at the National seminar at Birmingham 2000, Mr Poole was not on the information sheets, yet the BAB sneaked him in for his presentation. As I stood waiting for my long service award to Aikido I had Mr Poole my student and immediate beginner from 1968 standing next to me getting a similar award, how bizarre is that. when I asked a senior member of the BAB, " what is Jack Poole doing here? getting the same award as the genuine teachers"!. he replied " Mr Poole and his associates had threatened to leave the BAB if he was not included in the award ceremony".
7/ The BAB continued to refuse to even discuss the matter, as a result of the bad attitude of the BAB the Ellis Schools of Aikido resigned form the BAB.
8/ The best Aikido information site for the UK " The National Aikido Communication Database" took up the "Controversy" and demanded some answers from the BAB and as is the norm for this discredited organiseation they refused to comment, and later used their influence to stop the controversy which also resulted in the closure of the NACD.
I have received many emails of encouragement and support from aikidoists around the world, some offering information.
Because of the closure of the NACD I built the web site "British Aikido" at www.GeoCities.com/BritishAikido
with the sole intention of letting students know of the bizarre attitude of the BAB (BAB = Bad at Budo).
For a more indepth look at this controversy with photos and soon a video, then visit the "British Aikido" web site.
