Prostate Cancer In Wales Brachytherapy and Screening

Men over the age of 50 are at risk from Prostate Cancer and 32,000 men a year are diagnosed, this figure is increasing and 10,000 of those men will die. Next to breast cancer this is a major problem and we feel not enough is being done to screen men on a regular basis. It is also anticipated that the future will only show an increase in the number of cases due current lifestyles. Our main objective will be to establish a screening and prostate cancer awareness program for men in the age group 50-plus years of age. It has been recognised that males in this age group have a fear of talking about this subject or going to their doctors for check ups because of the prostate location or simply just do not want to know if they have cancer. Our aim will be to show that regular blood testing will pick up possible cancer activity through PSA (Prostate Specific Antigens) levels. With further diagnostic tests the cancer has a greater chance of treatment if identified early giving the patient improved quality of life, extended life expectancy and the greater likelihood of a cure.

Testing for prostate cancer currently monitors the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigens). This procedure is not accurate and is only an indicator, and we urgently need to fund research into a new reliable test
Join our support group and keep up with current developments and Other men’s experiences. We also believe wives and partners should Join in the group and get help with couping at this critical time.

We are also very active within the action group fighting for Brachytherapy in Wales, with men who have had this procedure in our group we can give first hand advice.
