v Collingbourne U11 - 21st June
Well done to the boys who, despite the rain and cold, put up a good performance against Collingbourne on Friday night.
Batting first we put on an impressive 107 runs in 16 overs. Nathan England-Jones and Robert Burry scored 27 and 23 respectively and the famous Arfur Extra added another 42 leaving the other players to score 15 runs between the 9 of them!!
Our bowlers then faced the difficult task of bowling when they were very cold and wet but contained Collingbourne to 67, of which old Arfur Extra cost us only 19 runs.
Bob preaches straight bowling and this is to reduce Arfur's score, particularly from wides, so remember Bob's advice - eyes level, high left arm and follow through straight etc.
A big thank you to Andrew England-Jones and Nigel Cracknell for umpiring in awful wet and cold weather. Also thanks to Catherine Gunn-Taylor and Mary Williams for scoring, which they sensibly did from the car with the heater on!!
Finally a thank you to Andrew Bills for the use of his strip. Not many teams play on a strip prepared so well by a 9 year old! Well done Andrew. |
v Bishops Cannings U11 - 23rd June
A strong team from Bishops Cannings won the toss and we batted first. Accurate bowling was the order of the day, both teams even on their Arfur Extra's score with 18 each, mainly from wides.
Sam Williams retired after a well thought out 26, consistently picking out the straight balls and playing with a straight bat. Some others forgot and had a swing and an early walk back. It was great to see the backing up and calling going well but a couple of the boys need to keep working at this aspect.
We scored 70 and they scored 74 with 3 overs and a couple of wickets to spare.
Thank you to Mary Williams, Adrian Goodall and Charlie Bishop for scoring for both sides.
(Arfur Extra is a frustrating player who's score is made up of wides, no balls and byes and a huge amount of the coaching the boys receive at this level is to keep Arfur's score as low as possible) |
v Devizes U11 - 1st July
Mondays return match against Devizes was very dubious with black clouds heading our way - but the decision was a wise one to play as it resulted in fine victory for All Cannings.
We batted first and our opening pair of Nicolai Bond and Jerome Ryan played well against their better bowlers and scored 16 between them (actually Nicolai scored all 16). Alex Brown and Tom Schneider then added 7 each. Michael Shantry was then very unlucky to run himself out. He made the correct call and then just hesitated for a second before carrying on. The ball was then fielded, thrown vaguely towards the wicketkeeper who missed the catch, but the ball hit him on the thumb and deviated about a meter and hit the top of the stumps. An amazing fluke but disappointing for our player. Charlie Lamb was next and scored 22 and several extras by being quick between the wickets. To give all players an opportunity to bat Charlie and Olly Goodall retired leaving Dom Gunn-Taylor and Sam williams the final over and the pair added 9 runs and a couple of extras in the over.
Our score was 96 with 62 from the bat and a generous 34 from our opponents via old Arfur Extras.
We then fielded and produced alot of tight bowling and a little erratic bowling. The scorebook shows both teams scored 62 with the bat. However their wicket keeper missed 14 extras and Sam Williams only 5 (one 4 and a single in 18 overs which is good keeping) and added to our tighter bowling we only conceded 21 extras (against 42 by Devizes), so the game was won by our superior bowling and wicket keeping.
Well done to all players. |
