If you enjoy dancing and like the idea of something more exotic, the mystery of the East, then add a touch of spice to your life with Belly Dance! This dance is fun aswell as giving you health in mind, body and spirit. Relax and enjoy an evening learning the secrets of Middle-Eastern Dance & Music and share skills with others who have been there or who are just starting. There will be an chance for informal dancing together. Led by Heather, an experienced performer and teacher specializing in Egyptian beladi, experienced in many styles and varieties including gypsy dance, ghawazee, saadi, isis wings, veil, stick, sword, with a good understanding of Egyptian rythmns. She also specializes in performance skills and, the best of traditions, the improvised dance. Heather has been teaching in Wiltshire for many years and has held classes in Calne, Devizes, Marlborough, Chippenham, Avebury and now Swindon. She has performed extensively all over the UK. She is known for her fluid, graceful dance and authenticity and has spent many years living in Middle-Eastern company.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the Middle-East, belly dance is enjoyed among groups of women, men and children for entertainment and within women-only groups where dancing in public is prohibited. It is not just a dance of seduction, though the dance has connections with fertility rites. The word 'belly' is thought to come from 'beladi' meaning country dance, folk dance, the peoples dance. However, there are many styles and types of Belly Dance and in the Middle-East there are many performers, some well-known, respected and loved.
This is a beautiful, graceful, earthy dance that is suitable for anyone, any age, size or shape.
Whether you want to perform or just enjoy dancing, it can give you increased flexibility and strength, increased self-esteem, poise and benefits to mind, body and spirit. Workshops/classes are friendly and supportive and most importantly FUN!

What happens at a workshop/course/class?
If you have never tried belly dance before, it can be a little daunting to enter a room and possibly be faced with a lot of ladies wearing what appear to be professional looking costumes with plenty of layers of glitter, coins and sequins. However, you will find that these ladies are not professional at all, they have just been bitten by the 'bellydance bug' and are enjoying their evening out, learning a skill that is fun, relaxing, and that they are keeping fit in a friendly, supportive atmosphere.
Some of my workshops may consist of complete beginners where you will all be in the same boat, not quite sure what to expect
Belly Dance is a skill that can take some time to acquire and there is always something new to learn. It is not something to learn in a few weeks, although a few moves can be mastered quite early on for some people. Others find it harder to get their body to do as they want it to, but with time they become more proficient and usually find there are physical, emotional and social benefits.
We will start with a warm-up which will include some basic moves, usually moving onto spending time on a specific movement or sequence of moves. I will help anyone who needs it, although I tend not to concentrate too much time on a complete beginner, allowing them to get used to doing movements they have probably never done before.We will then learn or practise a choreography. This is meant to be fun and no-one minds if you don't get it all right. There is no competition in Belly Dance. Learning a choreography will give you an idea of how the moves can be put together.
We end with a cool down including some graceful arm and hand moves.
Courses will be ongoing and will generally have a theme and a goal for the course, for example learning a choreography or a particular style of Arabic or Middle-eastern belly dance.
