Why we came about....
Bradford on Avon Preservation Trust Ltd is a charity run on a non-profit basis with the objects set out in its Constitution and detailed elsewhere on this site. It came into being as the Bradford on Avon Preservation Society in 1959 with the object of saving the cottages of Tory and Middle Rank, then scheduled for demolition and replacement with blocks of Council flats. Such redevelopment would have destroyed forever the attraction of this hillside overlooking the town. The fight to save the character of this part of Bradford, a fight which soon took on a national character, was successful and to-day Tory and Middle Rank cottages still exist, but improved and now much sought after as residences.

...but vigilance is still necessary...
With a town like Bradford there is a need for constant vigilance to prevent similar "vandalism by bad development" occurring once again and that is why the Preservation Trust, which is the successor to the original society continues to exist and continues to fight, not just for conservation, but to encourage suitable new modern development.
If it is to achieve its objectives it needs to recruit new members and to maintain a sufficient financial presence to be able both to fight undesirable change and to itself participate in the ownership and conservation of strategic properties around the town.

Who are our members?
Present membership is around 500. It is not confined to town residents but is open to all who support its objectives and, in fact, already includes many from other parts of the UK and from overseas who have come to know and love the character of Bradford on Avon. In addition to regular meetings and talks, the Trust involves itself in local education, encouraging the children of the town to take a pride in the landscape around them. Three times a year the Trust publishes the Guardian Angel, a newsletter providing members with news and articles |
