Early Learning Goals
At Central Pre-school we are committed to the Early Learning Goals which are:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development The children learn how to become confident and to establish relationships with other children and adults. They work on their own or as part of a group. They show respect to people of other cultures and beliefs. They learn to take turns and to share, what is right and what is wrong, to express their feelings and to treat living things and their environment with care. Activities within Pre-school that promote the above include: our Golden Rules, snack time helpers, choice during “free play”, home corner, phone box activities, craft table, puzzles, dressing up, stories, songs, music, instruments, rhymes, garage, train sets, duplo, circle time and registration.
Language and Literacy The children learn to listen and talk about their experiences, learn songs, poems and nursery rhymes and take part in role-play. They enjoy books, learn how to handle them carefully and begin to associate sounds with words and letters. They learn to recognise their own name and familiar words. Activities within Pre-school that promote the above include: interest table, theme, activities, role play, home corner, book corner, stencils, tracing cards, sand, water, cooking, snack time name cards, music instruments, songs, stories, garage, train sets, games and puzzles.
Mathematics The children learn shapes, patterns, number songs and counting games. They sort, match and count using everyday objects. They use numbers from 1 to 10 and sometimes up to 20. They begin to use mathematical language, eg more than, bigger than, behind, in front of. Activities within Pre-school that promote the above include: sorting, measuring, sand, water, puzzles, snack time, games, rhymes, poems, stories, surveys, peg boards, cooking, home corner, craft table, activities, stencils and shapes.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World The children learn about their families and the environment in which they live. They look at living, natural and man-made things. They explore and select materials and equipment to use and learn skills such as cutting, folding, joining and building. Activities within Pre-school that promote the above include: visitors, eg police, fire, dentist, the home corner, construction toys, puzzles, sand, water, dressing up, snack time, stories, music, rhymes, instruments, circle time and family events, eg birthdays.
Physical Development The children learn to move confidently with increasing control and co-ordination. They use a range of large and small equipment and climbing apparatus with increasing skill. They learn to handle appropriate tools, eg scissors, objects, construction toys and malleable materials with increasing control. Activities within Pre-school that promote the above include: walks to the park, parachute games, obstacle courses, music and movement, threading, cutting, activity table, puzzles, games, painting, sand, water, dressing up, trampoline, climbing frame, throwing and catching.
Creative Development The children explore sound, colour, texture and shape. They learn to respond to their senses, what the see, hear, smell, touch and taste, using art, music and role-play. They use their own imagination and express their ideas and communicate their feelings. Activities within Pre-school that promote the above include: painting, drawing, colouring, gluing, junk modelling, activities/craft table, pencils, stencils, dressing up, play dough, clay, salt dough sand, water, shaving foam, gloop, home corner, construction toys, stories and musical instruments.
