Lions helping and involving young people

The Lions organisation exists to support local communities and also help people of all ages who may be in need anywhere in the world.

This means involving and helping both young people and adults in every community.

Schools and community

Chippenham Lions are helping school associations raise funds through the running of “Race Nights” at schools in the towns of Chippenham, Corsham and the surrounding villages.
We provide the projection, sound facilities, Race DVD, operate the tote and compeer the evening for you.
We leave it to you to organise the hall, raffle, bar, refreshments and food (if required) - and of course, to get as many as possible of your parents, their relations and friends and also school staff (all with full pockets) to come along and enjoy the evening.

At our most recent event on 15th March, we were very pleased to help the Friends of Christian Malford School raise nearly £1000 on the evening.

"I wanted to pass on thanks on behalf of the Friends of the School, everyone had a fantastic evening and we all thought you and your team ran the evening very well and made the event a great success"

[Marion Coker, Chair, Friends of the School Association]

Lions take part in town events such as Chippenham's annual Family Fun Day at John Coles Park, the Christmas lights switch on (sale of mulled wine for mums and dads), and of course organise Santa's annual Carol Float tour of Chippenham and Corsham areas. This year we also hope to be involved in the Folk Festival and the Bowood family fun day.

Providing resources and financial support

Help in Teaching Life Skills
Lions are pleased to provide financial support to the TACADE project [a not for profit organisation] which promotes young peoples’ health and well-being in our schools.

We do this through the purchase and supply of educational packs such as “I am, I know, I can”. This support the teaching of personal, social and health education in primary schools. Similar packs are also available for other age groups.
To find out more contact us or visit the TACADE web site at
http://www.tacade.com

Expanding Horizons
We also provide help (subject to circumstances) to pupils raising funds to participate in educational and aid projects at home and overseas. This provides opportunities for young people to volunteer, be leaders, learn about other cultures and to travel. Examples are where we have provided help for local youngsters to attend youth conferences or undertake aid work such as digging water wells in drought ridden countries.

In addition we support participation in Lions International youth camps and/or exchanges. This is often a life-changing experience. The Lions International Youth Camp and Exchange Program is not conducted for tourism, education, or employment. Instead, it is a unique cultural learning opportunity. Most exchanges last about four to six weeks.

Helping less fortunate youngsters

Last summer we were pleased to make donations of £500 to North Wilts Holiday Club to enable them provide disadvantaged youngsters with a rare opportunity to "get away from it all". We also to donated £1000 to help support the wonderful work performed by Naomi House Hospice - raised from our summer dance held at Derry Hill Village Hall to help in the care they provide to terminally ill youngsters. At
Christmas, we provided help and support to those providing parties for children of lone parents and foster children. (This often came in the shape of a man with a white beard carrying a full sack!).

Last year, we were also pleased to make the following donations -

o £400 to the Bristol based Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
o £1000 to Springboard Opportunity Play Group in Chippenham
o £500 to Rowdeford School to help purchase equipment for a new Sensory Room for children in our area with severe learning
difficulties and Autism. This project was also supported by other local clubs, and also received a donation from LCIF.

Protecting the vulnerable and relieving poverty abroad

In the third world Lions are actively supporting projects to restore sight, provide clean water, and help street children.

Millions of children in the world suffer from poverty, homelessness, abuse, neglect, disease, and disabilities.

Whether they live alone by fate or by choice, the United Nations estimates that 100 million children sleep in the streets every night. Some are toddlers whose parents have died from disease or in war; others are runaways who have escaped domestic violence

The Lions Services for Children Program aims to improve the lives of children and young adolescents in adverse circumstances through health and education services, locally and internationally.

Since LCIF began in 1968, it has awarded nearly 8,700 grants totalling US$610 million. Every pound donated to LCIF goes toward a grant. Grants provide both immediate assistance following natural disasters and long-term disaster relief for reconstruction efforts. Grants help preserve sight, combat disability, promote health or serve youth.

Some examples are-

Children's Preschool Vision Screening
LCIF's children's eye photoscreening program enables Lions to conduct mass screenings of children for amblyopia ("lazy eye"). Diabetes Prevention/Treatment
Since 1982, LCIF has awarded nearly US$5m for research on diabetic retinopathy. The funding, the world's largest source of non-governmental support for diabetic retinopathy research, has resulted in a greater understanding of the disease and laid the groundwork for more effective treatments
