'Sven's Cult Heroes' - Favourite club ex-players.
The below submission is penned by our very own 'Sven' - Jason Roberts
It would be too difficult to name my Chippenham Police all time greatest eleven so I decided to name a few past legends that I have had the honour of playing alongside during my time at the club. Goalie- Dave HUNT; I first saw Dave play when he could fit easily into the goalkeeper jersey even after a boil wash. On his day he was the best keeper in the league and played with confidence that he even believed it himself. I remember a quite stunning save he made in The Paddy Tucker Memorial game in 97 when he somehow tipped a deflected shot over the bar. When he played I’m sure it gave the back 4 (not 3), a lot of confidence. His continued shouts from the back could be heard over 90 mins. The “Big Nev” of the club.Defender- Mike Johnson- A reliable left peg he would deliver the ball with such accuracy. A modern day Wayne Bridge. Rumoured to have played at a higher level, I first saw Mike play towards the twilight of his career. If he had his fault it was his pace but he would manage to get back in time for the following attack.Midfielders-
Bob Thomas
Pace down the left side, vocal encouragement to the end Bob reminded me of Giggs. You never knew if Bob would turn up on match day even though he was living 30 yards from the pitch at the time. I knew he was coming to the end of his playing days when I saw him tangled in the goal net while exchanging punches with an opposing defender. A must around the dressing room.
Mike Jones If you like me were lucky enough to play alongside Mike in the centre then you knew exactly what you’d get with him. Box to box, terrific engine, similar to Peter Reid in his day. Would love to sit on the ball and drag the ball back as if his boots were glued to it. I remembered he fired home a pressure penalty 10 mins from time against Fire-Arms in 98 to seal a 1-0 victory.
Striker-Steve Lever Steve had peaked by the time I arrived at the club in 96 but he was on his day the perfect target man. A mix of Joe Jordan, Bob Latchford and Paul Mariner rolled into one. Would come up with a goal from nothing, crash a header home and would finish with both feet. Injuries reduced him to the odd appearance over recent seasons but we all appreciated the efforts he made on match day to declare himself fit.
Super Subs- John Pickering- Never moaned when replaced or benched. Scored two stunners in one first half game only to be dragged off at half time. A gentleman on and of the pitch. Andy Wilcox- Unpredictable, he would go all out to impress. What he did not have in ability he made up with effort. Was capable of scoring if hit with ball on goal line.
I’d like to hear your all time greats
Sven.
