About the band
The history of the Chippenham Town Band goes back many years, certainly to the late 1890s when they were called the Chippenham Town Silver Band. This band carried on up until the Second World War, when they became the Wiltshire Home Guard Band (Dads Army). After a short time following the end of the war they reformed as the Chippenham Town Silver Band. This band did very well in brass band contests, becoming top band in the Wessex Brass Band Association. Then around 1953 the band closed down.
In 1992 the Mayor Doug Cleverly called a meeting for people interested in reforming a Town Band. It was reformed as a wind band comprising wind instruments as well as brass. Doug has supported the band as Chairman for nine years until 2001, when he retired from the post. He is still active as our President. Five players who attended the first rehearsal still play in the band.
Throughout the year the band plays at many local fetes, dining in nights for the RAF, carol playing at Christmas and, in the summer in the bandstand in John Coles Park. In July 2003, 20 band members went on a tour in Germany performing at various venues, the tour was very successful and enjoyed by us all. For more information please see the tour page. In July 2005 the band went to Holland for five days and stayed at a hotel in Utrecht, played in concerts and sightseeing, for more information visit the Tour 2005 pages.
We have Rehearsals every Monday 7:15 - 9:15pm (Except on Bank Holidays and in December) at The Cause, 42 Causeway, Chippenham New members are always welcome
