The Club

A cycling club had existed in Chippenham since 1890. In 1932 the club was reformed as Chippenham Cycling Club. In 1950 it was renamed Chippenham Wheelers and later as Chippenham & District Wheelers to reflect the wider area from which members came. In the seventies and eighties the club achieved considerable success in racing and time trialling, several members gaining outstanding results in National competitions. In 1981 Chippenham Wheelers promoted the CTC Birthday Rides, with over 700 cyclists taking part in a week of rides and social events. The club also promotes the triennial White Horse Weekend as part of the West Country weekend of cycling, in conjunction with Cheltenham CTC and Ross-on-Wye Cycling Club. The Castle Combe motor racing circuit is used every Good Friday for massed start racing. Annually five open time trials and two other road racing events are promoted, plus Audax and leisure riding events. The club has been awarded Clubmark Status by British Cycling. The award is a high quality mark identifying those clubs with junior sections that have worked hard to ensure that their club is safe, well structured and well managed. Currently the club has over 400 members including over 80 youth members.
