Case Study 1

Mr Alexander had complained to the Housing Officer about noise, loud parties and constant door slamming by Miss Baxter and her children. Community Mediation wrote to both parties and, with their agreement, mediators then visited each party for an individual and confidential meeting.

At the meetings, it transpired that both parties were more concerned about the atmosphere of intimidation between them than the noise itself.

A round table meeting was arranged for both parties, facilitated by the two mediators. At this meeting both parties were able to express their worries. They both agreed that the walls between their houses were thin and that they would try and keep noise levels down, although normal day-to-day noise would be acceptable. They also agreed to stop all intimidation between them and in future to "agree to disagree" about who was responsible for intimidating who in the past.

At the end of mediation both parties felt able to deal with any future concerns between themselves.

Case Study 2

A Policy Support Officer referred two households to the Community Mediation Service. The Reynolds were complaining that the Hunters had a number of children at their property who were causing noise and that the children played on part of the Reynolds' land.

Two mediators initially visited each of the households in their own homes. This gave both households equal time to have a discussion with the mediators about the situation, how it was affecting them, work out what they would like to change and if mediation could help.

Both households agreed to a face-to-face meeting. The Hunters agreed to address the problem of the children playing outside the Reynolds' house.

It was agreed that the Reynolds would telephone the Hunters when they felt there was unreasonable noise from the children and the Hunters agreed that they would deal with it. It was agreed that the Reynolds would not deal directly with the children.

Everyone agreed they wanted a peaceful life and mutual respect form one another and tht the best way to achieve this was to ignore one another. The Reynolds and the Hunters felt the mediation went well.
