Devizes Crib League
Rules 2008/09
1) The League shall be called The Devizes and District Cribbage League.
2) The object of the League is to organise and promote the game of cribbage in all Pubs and Clubs within the Devizes and District area.
3) The Committee shall consist of four Officers: a Chairman, a Vice Chairman an Hon. Treasurer and an Hon. Secretary, who will be jointly responsible for all matters of policy affecting the administration and finances of the League. In addition to the Officers, there will be three non official members of Committee and an independent Auditor, who is not a Committee member.
4) Elections to the Committee shall be held each year at the Annual General Meeting. The Secretary is to circulate the date, time and venue of the AGM to past and present teams.
5) Teams entering the League shall pay the Treasurer a non returnable entry fee, the sum of which shall be determined at the A.G.M. This fee must be paid by 31st July preceding the commencement of the new season.
6) The Treasurer shall maintain a League Fund Record of the financial affairs of the League and its assets. The League funds shall only be used to further the objectives of the League.
7) The financial year of the League shall be from one A.G.M. to the following one. An audited statement of income and expenditure shall be prepared by the Treasurer to be presented at the A.G.M.
8) Agenda items for the A.G.M. must be submitted in writing to the Secretary, no less than seven days prior to the meeting.
9) A team for League and Knockout Cup matches will consist of four players. Each player may play for only ONE team within any season. In exceptional circumstances, the authority of the Committee to allow a move of a player or players from one team to another within a season may be sought. An example of where this might be appropriate would be if the loss of a player or players from a team would make it impossible for the remainder of the team to fulfil its fixtures.
10) All League and Knockout Cup matches shall normally be played on Thursdays, commencing at 8:30pm unless rearranged by mutual agreement of the teams concerned. The Pairs Knockout will also take place on a Thursday, but will commence at 8:00pm promptly.
11) Each League match will consist of twelve legs, six to be played on each table.
12) Two League points shall be awarded to the winning pair on each table. In the event of a tie on a table, then one point shall be awarded to each pair. In addition, two league points shall be awarded to the team winning the match, with one point awarded to each team in the event of a tied match.
13) In the event that two or more teams have equal numbers of points at the end of the season, then their relative League positions will be decided on the number of legs won by each.
14) Each Team Knockout Cup match will consist of eleven legs, five to be played on each table, with the 11th leg to be played by the table completing its five legs first.
15) Reserves or persons watching shall not comment or coach whilst play is proceeding.
16) The winning Captain shall be responsible for ensuring that the completed result card is with the Secretary within no more than three days of the match being played.
17) All result cards must show the full surname of all the players.
18) In the event that a team is unable to fulfil a fixture on its allotted date, it is the responsibility of the Captain to ensure that the Captain, Landlord or Landlady of the opposing team and the League Secretary are notified at least 24 hours before the fixture should have taken place. The fixture is to be rearranged to the mutual convenience of both teams.
19) In the event that a team gives less than eight hours notice of cancellation of a fixture, that team shall be liable for a charge of £5 for food provided.
20) In the event that only two players turn up from one team, one table is to play six legs to determine the table result. The other table will be deemed to have been a 4-0 win for the non-defaulting team and two table winning points will be awarded to them.
21) Any team which withdraws from a match or matches and does not complete all its fixtures will not be eligible for any trophy at the end of the season. Any team which is unable to complete its fixtures because of the withdrawal from a match or matches by their opponents will claim two four to nil table wins and a match win. Thus they will be awarded the maximum six league points for the match
22) The Officers of the Committee reserve the right to refuse entry to the League, or during the season, of any individual or team who, in their opinion, has been found guilty of any misconduct at any function under the auspices of the League. Complaints of any nature must be put in writing to the Secretary.
23) In the event of any disputes, the Officers of the Committee will investigate and for this and for all other purposes concerning the business of the League, their decision shall be final and binding.
24) The normal rules of the game of Cribbage shall apply to the League, but the following particular points should be noted:
a. A “run” of cards cannot be made between a King and an Ace (so “Q, K, A” and “K, A, 2” are not valid runs);
b. Two points will be awarded to the dealing team if a Jack is turned as the “centre” card – even if these two points are sufficient to win the leg.
