SEASON PREVIEW 2007-08
Fc St Georges Player Manager Js Glasson finally looks to have clinched Promotion to Division One of the Frome and District Sunday league after his best season in his Managerial Career so far. The Frome & District Sunday league restructuring proposals for next season , means that both Third and fourth placed teams ,Paulton Rovers and Fc St George get to go up. Fc ‘s Player Manager would have rather gone up through the normal channels and rues five straight defeats over the Christmas period.”We were nine points ahead of fourth spot ,and had played more games than most. Those defeats cost us a cup semi-final and we could have given Champions The Weaver Fc and Three Swans Fc a better challenge for automatic promotion places.. The “saints” who were formerly Yew Tree Rangers .finished fourth after residing in the top three all season,, That was until Paulton were gifted third spot., Runners up Three Swans who were already promoted did not turn up for the Paulton v Three Swans , thus the league gave Paulton , who were one point behind Fc St George the three points – It still was a great end to the season for the Warminster Sunday league side who deserved to go up after their bright start 9 months earlier . Pre-season the club had started building on their success of the previous season where they finish in the top six after a club record of 13 games unbeaten. Promoted Asda Fc, finally breaking the Fortress St Georges status. While missing out on Promotion, Fc St George trained throughout the summer and Glasson brought in Deverills Duo Midfielder Sean Holton and Mark Davies, Davies who had left the Club to Join Asda last season resigned for yet another year under Glasson. Other New Signing were Keeper Alex Makwana, club captain Matt Crucifix, Simon Clark and Polish man Daruis Snedzik who failed to find a regular place in the side.
Fc St George kicked off their season with a good run of friendlies which boosted their confidence and it showed in their their first six games all at home , Favorites Three Swans Fc were first to test Glasson”s new side, but they could only manage a 3-3 draw, A Rory Kelly penalty ,the first of striker Mikey Paynes 36 goals and a Mark Wallis late equalizer grabbing a deserved Point. A week Later Bereberry were mauled 11-1 by a superb display of football. A Mikey Payne Hat- trick and a rare brace from the Manager himself put them in the dizzy heights of second place. Next it was Champions Weaver who were also fancied favorites, but their long ball approach on a windy day only managed a 1-1 draw. Fc St George were the only side to take a point off Weaver. The Saints then took Division Ones relegated Ac Mee Lamb to extra time losing 6-4 in the tony Whorlow Memorial cup this was their first away game of the season, Inconsistent Griffin Fc then lost twice in back to back division two league and cup games at St Georges. Mikey Payne Grabbing Five goals in the league 6-1 win and a brace in the following 4-1 division two cup game cup win. Glassons side were brought back to earth when they were soundly beaten 7-1 by Division Ones Permaframe Fc in the Spring cup a week later. But the warminster side bounced back with another two wins, 6-1 away to Westfield and beating Dilton Rovers 3-0. Fc Were now looking good in second place but still had played a few more games than most. Glassons next away fixture was against Twelve bells and his side made hard work of a 1-3 victory, Weather conditions played havoc with the fixtures and after a three week break Glassons side looked out of sorts and nervy and went on to lose 5 games on the trot. A gallant display saw Three Swans edge a 3-2 win at Horningsham, and Bereberry turned their season round with the same result at Radstock. Next it was Norton Nomads, They travelled to St Georges and broke THE SAINTS GREAT HOME RECORD winning 3-2 as well ,and then followed that a week later with a 3-0 win in the qtr final of the division two cup at Ston Easton. Goalkeeper Alex Makwana was the only player to leave through the season , but this gave Portuguese import Henrik “ gato” Da Silva , a regular on the bench a chance to shine for the rest of the season.A disappointed Glasson seeing his best chance of cup glory fade away concentrated on the league.Usualy its survival but the thought of promotion seemed to inspire his side who had started to look complaciant, New signing defensive midfeidler Chris Ayres arrived and quickly established himself . Opening his account in the 4-2 defeat to Weaver fc . left Back Mark self also gaining a record that match for most conceded penalties in one game, Self giving away three penalties in a tough top of the table clash ..Things looked rosy again when Stuart Green returned from Australia and bagged a hatrick as well as a 35 day suspension. in the 6-1 win away to Dilton Rovers ,, This Result cementing Dilton rovers to the bottom of the table fpr the rest of the season ,. Fc St George had by now played more games than any other team in the division and chiseled out a nine point gap between them and Westfield who were fourth, Just as things look good Griffen fc pulled off a shock 5-2 to lift them out of the bottom three. And Glassons side had another two week break to lick their wounds . This GAVE Bereberry, Paulton, Nomads and Westfield all on good runs time to narrow the gap , Fc needed to start winning and as the nine point gap became two Glassons side won three games on the bounce. Sureset Rangers lost 4-0 at Westbury , Nomads could not do the treble by also losing 4-0, and Westfield lost 7-3 as St Georges strolled the field. Tho it was still not enough to shrug off the attentions from Paulton Rovers who had 5 games in hand to Fc St George. Glassons attention was then focused on the Warminster Hostpital clash against Mere Town which was a 7-0 walk over for the Saturday side, Glasson then had to face Sureset Rangers in a local derby game with a depleted side and a lack luster performance saw his side lose 4-1. With three games left the run in became intense as Glasson”s side were made to sweat it out as Paulton Rovers who had games in hand were flying up the table. March was a crucial time for both sides as Fc St George had to play Paulton Twice in two back to back games. A home 1-1 draw at Fortress St Georges cranked up the nerves ,as Paulton beat Sureset Rangers three days later to finally overtake Glasson”s side into third, Defiant St George then slayed their Radstock opponents four days later in a resounding 4-1 away win to reclaim third spot. Beating Lowly Twelve Bells 6-1 a week later was the icing on the cake for Glasson”s side as they wound up their season with a emphatic victory and Prolific striker Mikey Payne Grabbed his 35th and 36th goals of a record breaking season . This put more pressure on Paulton who had a game in hand to play and four points behind. On the same day Paulton beat another Warminster side Sureset Rangers 8-4 To Go Within a point of Fc St George. Then There was a ten day wait for the climax of the season when Paulton had to host Three Swans in a game that would finally settle the outcome of the season . and Three Swans already promoted gifted Paulton all three points by not turning up. Fc St George finished fourth and now face a bigger challenge in Division One.
