Minety Goes Into Battle with Developer

Villagers in Minety, Wiltshire are furious that a planning application that was withdrawn earlier this year, due to overwhelming public opposition, has been re-submitted.

The application proposes the building of a large number of houses on the school field and an adjacent field together with shops and workshop units. Villager Lesley Cowley, who is organising the Friends of Minety protest group, commented “Minety is a lovely small village and we want it to stay that way. A development of this size will turn Minety into a town. Villagers united to submit over 400 objections to the last application and we will do just the same again. The developer does not seem to realise how unpopular his application is - but this is not surprising given that he lives in Andover and has not even bothered to discuss his plans with the villagers”.

The Friends of Minety group has already received strong political support. James Grey, MP for North Wilts said “I have rarely seen a more disgraceful planing application than this one, which threatens to ruin Minety. Villagers have my 100% support and everyone in the village and surrounding areas should unite to oppose it.” Local Councillor Pat Sears commented “I will be watching this application closely and cannot see it being voted for. I fully support the village objections to the application”.

Villagers would welcome any help and support. The best way to do this would be to join the many objectors. Objections can be sent to North Wiltshire District Council, Bewley House, Marshfield Road, Chippenham, SN15 1JN quoting reference: 00/02000/OUT. Minety Poised to Win Planning Battle

Villagers in Minety, Wiltshire are poised to win the latest round of their new battle against a developer trying to build over 90 new homes, a ‘village centre’ and new school in the village. The original application was withdrawn due to strong opposition and villagers were furious when it was re-submitted again this year. The application is due to be considered by North Wiltshire District Council members at a forthcoming Development Committee meeting, expected to be attended by large numbers of villagers.

Following a stormy Public Meeting, over 600 objections to the application have been lodged by angry villagers. Letters of objection have also been submitted by the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, Minety Parish Council and The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. The Governors of Minety Primary School have now unanimously voted against the plans and have decided to improve the school on its existing site. Both the Principal Planning Officer for North Wiltshire District Council and the Highways Department of Wiltshire County Council have also recommended rejection.

North Wiltshire MP James Gray, who spoke against the plan at the Public Meeting, warmly welcomed the news. “I hope that these insensitive developers will now realise that they are wasting their time and will let the matter rest,” he said.

Villager Lesley Cowley, who is leading the ‘Friends of Minety’ volunteer group that was formed to oppose the original application commented “We are confident that the application will be refused by the Councillors at their meeting, who must surely take account of the strength of public opinion against the application. I fail to understand why, in the face of such overwhelming opposition, the developer has yet to get the message that his plans are not welcome here. Minety is a lovely village and we want it to stay that way”.
