Introduction

The North Swindon Family Centre represents a very important commitment by the NSPCC and other agencies involved in making a difference to children and families in the North of Swindon. We have extended the family centre building so that we are able offer more comfortable surroundings for our counselling and support sessions as well as a fun room for working with children. We have also recently had a new porch area added to the centre. This provides a much need 'buggy park' and also a comfortable waiting place for children and their parents/carers.

As well as paid staff, the Centre has several volunteers. Some are parents who came to use the Centre and now want to put something back. We recognise the importance of enabling parents to gain self confidence and provide support to others. Other volunteers here about the work we do and like to give something back to the communuity. We provide an opportunity for volunteers to use their talents and at the same time further the work of the Family Centre.

Children are the main reason for our existence, and in the area we serve there are many vulnerable young children. Over the last year we have run Community Safety Skills groups, after school groups, Parenting Groups, Play Courses, as well as counselling and individual support. These are all in addition to our 'drop-in' sessions and Fathers' Groups.

The most important thing that the Family Centre can do is be there when children and parents really need it. Our long term goal is to end child abuse. We have to gain the trust and acceptance of local parents and children, we have to reach out and welcome in as many as we can to begin to change some children's experiences.
