Stand and Deliver - "Dick Turpin" 60080 will steam.

I started my second Model Works kit in December 2004 and I have made steady progress over the last 8 months. The kit has gone together reasonably well so far but it does help to have some workshop equipment to finish of and or improve the occasional component.

This loco is much larger and of course very heavy compared to the 5 inch Black Five. It soon got too heavy to manually lift the loco frames once a few of the parts were attached. A hydraulic lifting table and overhead hoist have been very beneficial in making life easier for me.

I concentrated on the tender as a first priority - and soon realized just how large this was going to be. As you can see from the pics it is in the "Paint Shop" now and is complete except for pipe work and fixing up the vacuum brake system.

The loco frames are well supported with heavy-duty stretchers and a massive draw bar at the cab end, so I am very confident of a good rigid structure.

Once the cylinders were fitted it seemed like the best time to paint the frames so that job has just been completed and all the wheels fitted along with the suspension and brake gear.
The middle cylinder has been set up with the slide bars cross head and connecting rod. Every thing rotates so far although on the tight side. I expect it will need quite a bit of running in on air once the outside motion is fitted later this month (July).

It has been a little while since the last report on the A3 builds progress. However things have moved on if only slowly over the last few months. The main reason being that no new kits have appeared since August from Model Works until December. This has been due to a few in house manufacturing problems. However as you can see the tender is now more or less finished all painted and lined out. I used Phoenix Transfers for the lining and the late style BR emblem, which has more than met my expectations, (so I hope the Loco comes out just as good). I only have a few water pipes and the vacuum pipe work to finalize to finish the tender.

The pistons have been set up in the cylinders but I still await timing data so the engine can be run on air, plus I still require the weigh shaft and reversing gear for the motion to be complete.

My main progress centres on the arrival of the smoke box, smoke box door & hinges, blast pipe and saddle. They all have been set temporally in place and also the number plate fitted.

I am now looking forward to the arrival of the boiler and then all the major parts will be in place.
