Account of the Battle of Ferozeshah, 21st &22nd Dec 1845
In 1845 the 62nd Regiment was stationed in Madras and Bengal and took the field against the Sikhs in the first war against that nation. In the battle that of Ferozeshah, the Regiment played a noble part, losing more than half its effectives in killed and wounded, its losses being more then those of any other regiment engaged.
The battle ended in one of the most brilliant victories standing to the credit of the British Army, 35,000 of the enemy with more than 100 guns and a strongly entrenched position, being attacked and routed by a British force of under 18,000 with 63 guns. The battle was not commenced until late afternoon, and just as the British succeded, after sustaining great losses, in reaching the enemy's position, night came down and put an end to the fighting. Both forces stood off a little and bivouacked on the field of battle and renewed the fight with unbated vigour with the earliest light of dawn. The enemy was defeated with great slaughter and all his guns were captured or destroyed.
The 62nd led the attack on the main position, defended by the greater portion of the enemy's guns, which mowed great gaps in the ranks of the advancing Regiment, but they went on, losing 18 officers out of 23, and 281 rank and file out of 560, and most of the companies were commanded by a Sergeant when the battle was resumed the next morning. The gallantry of the Regiment was witnessed by Sir Hugh Gough, the General un Command, and he personally complimented the survivors on their steady and devoted gallantry under a storm of fire. |
PARADE
 | A ceremonial parade is held annually on which, in appreciation of the services rendered by the Sergeants, the Colours are handed over by the Commanding Officer to the custady of the Warrant Officers and Sergeants of the Battalion for the rest of the day. A Sergeants' Ball is held in the evening and the Colours are handed back to the officers at midnight.
The composition of the colour parties on this day differs from the normal one which is two sulbalterns, a Warrant Officer Class II and two Sergeants. The Officers Colour Party consists of two Subalterns and three Corporals. The Sergeants' Colour Party consists of two Colour Sergeants, a Warrant Officer Class II and two Sergeants.
Before the handover of the Colours from the Officers to the Sergeants, the Commanding Officer reads out the charge:
"Warrant Officers and Sergeants of the Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment. I am about to hand over to your custody for a period, the Colours of the 1st Battalion. This high honour is bestowed on you in commemoration of the gallant services rendered by your predecessors at the battle of Ferozeshah, the annivarsary of which we celebrate today. Safeguard and honour these Colours as your Officers have ever done and let the fact that our Colours are entrusted to your keeping be not only a reminder of past services but also a visible expression of the confidence and trust which today your Officers justly place in you."
Hand over the Colours
Another unique custom on this parade is that the Regimental Sergeant Major alone commands the escort to the Colours, which is usually the Champion Drill Company.
