ARMY RUGBY FINAL

You will be aware that today the battalion beat the GREEN HOWARDS in the semi-final of the Thames Water Army Rugby Union Challenge Cup (28-13). This is the third year in a row that the Regiment has reached the finals and, with the impending break up of the Regiment this may be the last time.

The final will take place in Aldershot at the Army Rugby Union Stadium on Wednesday 2nd March, kicking off at 1715hrs against the ROYAL SCOTS. It goes without saying that the team would welcome as much support as possible and the 1st Battalion will be there in strength. However, we would welcome all members of the Regiment, past and present, to make it a really special regimental event. Win or lose we would then like to host everyone to an all ranks post-match party in Aldershot straight after the match.
The venue is still to be confirmed, but will be cleared shortly and will be signposted from the match venue. It will be a great opportunity for a reunion.

I look forward to seeing you all on the touchline

Army Rugby Cup Result

2nd March 2005

The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire & Wiltshire Regiment (‘Slashers’) are Champions

Yesterday was a bitterly cold evening as our rugby team faced the Royal Scots in the Final of the Army Rugby Union Challenge Cup in Aldershot, sponsored by Thames Water It was a thrilling contest with the ‘Slashers’ playing their best ever rugby in the first half.

Both teams had a similar playing style and appeared evenly matched but there was passion to the ‘Slashers’ which just gave them the edge and at half time the score was 24 - 3.

By the start of the second half, the snow was falling heavily and the wind had picked up in the Royal Scots’ favour. Our backs found it difficult to catch the high ball as it fell from the flood lights and snow and, despite an initial try from the ‘Slashers’, the Royal Scots clawed their way back into the game. Three Scottish tries later but with a vast partisan crowd willing an end to the game, the final score stood at 31 – 24; RGBW are the 2005 Army Rugby Champions.

This was our third appearance in the final in three years and it was a memorable performance. Played with real grit, determination, great skill and extraordinary spirit, the team displayed all that is embodied in the RGBW. There is no doubt that the support from across the Regiment on the day lifted the team and willed them to win. All of this was accomplished, together with another outstanding display from the battalion’s Corps of Drums.

This might be the last time this Regiment plays in this competition; if this is to be the case, we retire as the champions.
