Morning
After a coffee and welcome briefing from our hosts for the day Sgt "Greenie" Greensmith an Air Loadmaster on 70 Sqn and Cpl Wenda Milner an Air Steward, we moved across to TAC MED WING where we were briefed on the work of the unit, this involes provision of medical facilities in-theatre and casualty evacuation from front line to in-theatre facilities or back to the UK. Greenie then gave a talk on the history and role of 70 Squadron, describing the different marks of Hercules currently in service. We then took a break for a very nice buffet lunch provided by the mess and served in the crewroom. | |
|
Hercules
| After lunch we were driven out across the pan to have a look round a K version of the Hercules. Greenie spent some time explaining his role as Loadmaster and pointing out what various bits of kit are for. | |
|
Fire Section
 | | Next stop was the Defence Fire Service situated next the the Control Tower |
|
Monitor Power
 | | The Fire Crew then showed the power of the water jet produced - Glad the wind was in the right direction. |
|
Approach Control
| From the Fire Section it was a short walk up to the Radar Room in the Tower. We were surprised to note the amount of air traffic in the area - not all headed for Lyneham | |
|
Local
 | One more flight of stairs and we were in the "glass bubble" on top of the Tower which is where the local airfield control is exercised. From here we watched a few arrivals and departures |
|
Farewell
We returned to the crewroom for a welcome cup of coffee and said our goodbyes.
Thank you RAF Lyenham for your hospitality and special thanks to Greenie and Wenda our escorts for the day
