Legend Open 2005

Sunday 6th March 2005 saw the 4th Legend Shotokan Open Competition held at the Littledown Centre in Bournemouth. The competition was very well attended by clubs from all over the UK. The standard of karate displayed throughout the day was extremely high, with the obvious progressing ability of the cadets over the last few years and with the lower grades displaying an evident potential to be extremely competent karate-ka in the future. As always the extremely high level of ability at adult level was plain to see throught the day.
It was Sensei Denise Halliwell, chief instructor of our club who stood out as one of the best competiors there. She won 1st place in the Ladies Individual Kumite as well as taking the 1st in the Ladies Individual Kata. She was also a member of the team winning the Ladies Team Kumite event and at the end of the day was awarded Best Female Competitor 2005.
An excellent day all round but especially Sensei Halliwell who can add 4 more trophies to her collection!

Christmas Competition 2005

Sunday the 11th December 2005 saw the first major competition for members of the Salisbury Shotokan Karate Club. Armed with their new club fleeces they certainly looked the part as they entered the Sir David English Sports Centre in Bournemouth for the F.B.S.K.U(I) annual Christmas Competition. Families and friends of the club competitors turned out in full and provided a fantastic team spirit for all of the Salisbury competitors. Eighteen members entered the competition and by the end of the long and tiring day the majority had won a medal or trophy of some sort.

Particularly outstanding was Karen Hacker's first fight of the day against a much larger opponent in the female kumite, Karen scoring within the opening seconds a fantastic awaza-wasa combination of maewashi-geri/uraken scoring ippon. Karen went on to win first place in the womens kumite.

Other club wins include:

Rosie Conway, Tom Learner, Rachel Jackson coming first in junior team kata 10th- 4th Kyu with a great example of Heian Shodan, and joint third in the same category went to Sarah Belk, Emily Knowles and Anna MacDuirmid.

Tom Learner went on to win boys kumite over 5’2” 10th – 4th kyu 10-15 years, whilst team mate, Simon Blackman fought bravely through several rounds and a bloodied nose to gain a joint third place.

Matthew Cusens and Che Marsh came away with joint third places in the 10-15 years 10th – 4th kyu under 5’2” kumite and under 10 years 10th – 4th kyu sanbon kumite respectively.

Tye Raymond (5th kyu), Paris and Kieren Lovell (8th Kyu) fought fearlessly against brown and black belts in the under 5’2” team kumite, eventually gaining a joint third place.

Katy Stewart fought well in the female kumite, being the lowest grade entered in the category she fought very well and came out of it with a third place.

Salisbury teams A and B came away with two joint 3rd places in the over 5'2" 10th - 4th kyu team kumite. Teams comprised of Tom Learner, Emily Knowles, Anna MacDuirmid, Simon Blackman, Sarah Belk and Rachel Jackson (in no particular order).

Jo Garrett, Sam Stewart, Oliver White and James Johnson also competed and performed exceptionally well.

Overall we were very impressed by the clubs performance, it really was excellent and we are very proud of everyone’s achievements. Let’s try hard to perform even better next year!

Salisbury SKC Host the 'Salisbury 1st Invitational' Comp

Sunday 30th May saw the cathedral city of Salisbury host a meeting of titanic proportions. Three great clubs in modern day Shotokan met in a clash that shook the martial arts world to its roots!

As clubs from Plymouth, Weymouth and the host city of Salisbury prepared to do battle, the tension in the air grew to almost unbearable levels. No member of the teams were left unsaited as catorgories were provided for all; from the smallest (5-7 years) to even the old and battle scarred (Black Belt Seniors).

The event was ably overseen and well run by the Chief Instructors of all three clubs. Sensei Putt, Sensei Hoskins and Sensei Halliwell ensured that fair play was adhered to throughout the day and that the competion was ran without a hitch.

A special thank you goes to Sue Putt for ably manning the refreshments and ensuring that not one competitor or referee was found wanting for food and drink!

All the competitors met and clashed resoundingly and all fought bravely. Honour was kept and won during this momentous day. A day that will be remembered by all for many years to come.
