Denise Halliwell

I started training in 1994 (all those years ago when I was young) at a small Karate club in Trowbridge with the K.U.G.B who graded me up to 3rd Kyu.

I moved to the B.S.K.U. in about 1995 and took my 1st Dan in 1996 under club Instructor Mark Carroll. Two years later (1998, just in case that was difficult) I graded to 2nd Dan again with the B.S.K.U. Whilst studying at the university of Plymouth I trained with Sensei Colin Putt who helped me gain my 3rd Dan in 2001 with the now called F.B.S.K.U(I).

I have been fortunate to have been able to train with many fantastic instructors that have all helped with my Karate and given me broad view of all aspects of this martial art.

I first started training in 2000 in Plymouth with Sensei Colin Putt who gradred me up to 3rd Kyu. I stayed in Plymouth until I had to move to Wiltshire in 2002. I took my 2nd - 1st Kyu gradings with Sensei Mark Carroll and I passed 1st Dan with the F.B.S.K.U.(I) technical committee in 2003.

Despite actively participating and instructing in a diverse array of sports over many years, I began Karate late and started training at Dojo -Taiyo in Herford Germany in 1999 along with my young son (the original plan was to give him some morale support for a few weeks and then return to gardening!). However, I was fortunate in that my natural ability and conditioning allowed me to adapt quickly to karate and it wasn’t long before I had the bug for the martial art. Under the guidance of Sensie John Camagnole 5 Dan, I progressed through the grades taking my 1 Dan grading in Auerbach Germany in 2006, under the watchful eyes of both Shihan Akio Nagi 8 Dan who is the Chief Instructor of Shotokan Karate International Deutschland (SKID) and senior coach of the German national Shotokan Karate squad and Sensie Murakami 6 Dan who is 2 x World Kumite and Kata champion and senior instructor at SKIJ (Japan) headed by Hirokazu Kanazawa 10 Dan (Mr Shotokan).

I am privileged to be affiliated to an organisation who continues to teach and train traditional Shotokan Karate techniques. Over the years I have been fortunate and honoured to receive training from some of the most highly respected Karate Masters, including: Kanazawa, Nagi, Asano, Murakami, Tanaka, Wyan Otto, and of course Sensie Denise Halliwell all of whom have been inspirational in helping me to learn, understand and develop the ethos and skills of Shotokan Karate.
