June 2008
Well another year and time to start the mixed grade FBSKUI courses. The first one of the year was held in Plymouth and 5 club members travelled down to enjoy the challenging training regime and to take the opportunity totrain with other Sensei and people than just those from the club.
Training started at 12pm continuing to 3pm with a Kyu grading and Dan grading to follow.
Many people from several different clubs turned, faces known and unknown to train. Training was hard work covering all 3 main aspects of karate.
Congratulations to Richard Cox who was thrown in in the deep end on the day to pass his 5th Kyu (purple belt) grading under the watchful eyes of Sensei Colin Putt and Gerry Breeze.
Also congratulations to the many people who achieved the next step in their Karate learning and more spectacularly the 4 people who managed to achieve 1st Dan Black belt!
Many thanks to Steve Wadlan from the D.S.K.C. for the photos, some very good action shots there and some incriminating evidence best kept hidden in the vaults!

Dave Hooper Course August 2008
On the Sunday morning Sensei Chris and I set off early for the long drive to Plymouth. Arriving shortly before the instructors and other students we got ready and were keen to get started.
Lots of students turned up among them many new faces and a range of different grades. The lesson got underway with a long warm up then Sensei Hooper took all of us back to basics, little did we know this was how the lesson would start and finish. Sensei Hooper emphasized the importance of all basic movements from the position of the hip, keeping a good strong stance, pulling your hikite and most important keeping everything relaxed to help improve speed and overall technique when blocking, punching and kicking which was then put into practice during some gohon kumite.
The second half of the day started with some kicking drills again we were working on all the basics but we were encouraged to concentrate on not just basics but to relax and improve the speed of our attacks. The lesson came to an end with a few performances of Heian Shodan some of which are still lost on me today but were very challenging to do and some very strange warm down drills that created a bit of competition between the student and also a bit of humour.
All in all the course was very enjoyable and challenging and I would highly recommend a lesson with Sensei Hooper to any and all karateka, its well worth the money and the long drive.
