Salisbury Shotokan Karate Club
– By Rosie Conway (8th Kyu aged 12 years)
I first found out about Salisbury SKC back in September 2004. Chris mentioned before that he did karate but he’d never really gone into detail, one day he just said “come along to a session”. We went along that night and had a terrific time!
Although a lot of people think that karate is either about flinging your arms around and making funny noises or leaping up buildings Jackie Chan style it’s not. Karate is about self-awareness and self-discipline. Senseis Denise and Chris have taught me that.
Sensei Denise Halliwell, 3rd Dan, is a very inspirational woman. I think all senseis should have the qualities she has. She is very encouraging, explains everything well and is an excellent role model for all females in the club. As well as winning many competitions she is also an experienced referee in the F.B.S.K.U.(I.) at only 25.
Sensei Chris Ashton, 1st Dan, is a credit to the F.B.S.K.U.(I.). His disciplinary skills are incredibly hard to live up to, he always answers questions as fully as he can and shows examples of what he expects you to do.
To sum up Salisbury SKC, I would say it is an encouraging, confidence building, wonderful place where anyone can join in.
