The Association was formed in 1948. Our aims are to provide a lively organisation for past and present naval officers, offering a varied and interesting social programme in a friendly environment; to encourage and maintain the spirit of the Royal Navy; to preserve contact with the Royal Navy and keep up with naval affairs; to develop and maintain links with similar organisations; and to support naval charities.
We usually meet monthly. Our programme includes talks and visits (usually with a naval or maritime theme), social gatherings, lunches and formal dinners, including an Annual Dinner in May and Trafalgar Night in October. We usually meet either at the TA Centre in Dyke Road, Brighton, or at the Hove Club in Fourth Avenue, Hove.
Some of our meetings, particulary formal dinners, culminate in singing the authorised RNR version of Sussex by the Sea; often our rendition is so bad, but occasionally so good, that invariably our President orders us to sing it again - the results are rarely much better, often worse, but it's great fun all the same.
Membership is open to past and present officers of the RN, RM, WRNS, QARNNS, their reserves, the naval cadet forces (SCC/CCF(RN)), RFA, Merchant Navy and Commonwealth navies. Associate membership is open to past and present officers of the Army, RAF and CCF((Army) and (RAF)) and to widows/widowers of deceased full members. The membership total is now around 150; it includes a number of serving and retired regular officers as well as many past officers of Sussex Division RNR. Although most of our members are or have been associated with Sussex, this is not a requirement.
There is a modest annual subscription (currently £10 per annum) to cover running costs, including a monthly newsletter. More information, our current programme, recent newsletters and a membership application are available from our website, link below. The Hon. Secretary can be contacted via the mail form, above left.
