Spitfires' 2007 6-a-side Tournament
Swindon Spitfires held their annual 6-a-side tournament at South Marston over the weekend on 16th and 17th June 2007 with the event again being well supported with teams coming from as far away as Maidenhead, Wales, Birmingham and the Isle of Wight. In all 106 teams entered the event, showing the continuing growth in the Women's and Girls' game.
Under 8’s. The under 8’s festival involved 4 teams, two from Swindon Spitfires and two from Welsh club Pontypridd Town. Each team played each other once, no scores were kept, and everyone who took part received a small memento.
Under 10's Two groups, one of six teams and one of five due to a dropout, saw the top two from each progress to the knockout stages. Mardy Tigers topped Group 1 ahead of Kidlington Youth, but only on goal-difference with both on eight points. Maidenhead came third with six points, followed by Trowbridge Wanderers and Abertysswg Angels.
Group 2 saw hosts Swindon Spitfires finish top with thirteen points, one ahead of St Edmunds. Wootton Bassett came third with ten points, then Coed Cae Colts, Crickhowell Panthers and Purton.
In the semi-final Mardy Tigers beat St Edmunds 2-0 on penalties and Kidlington won 1-0 against Spitfires. Mardy Tigers won a close final against Kidlington, again on penalties.
Under 10's Winners: Mardy Tigers.
Under 12s The under 12's saw 19 teams play in four qualifying groups, a late withdrawal again reducing numbers. Group 1saw Mardy Tigers top with a maximum nine points followed by Abertysswg Angels on six. Spitfires 'Black' finished third on four points and Derry Hill filled the last place.
In Group 2 Cadbury Heath also recorded maximum points (12) to win it, and Spitfires 'Blue' just edged second place on goal difference from Coed Cae Colts and FC Chippenham who all finished with six points, leaving North Leigh to prop the group up.
Group 3 saw Salisbury City top with twelve points and Port Talbot CYP second, three points behind. Third were Crickhowell Panthers on four points followed by Spitfires 'White' and Wootton Bassett.
Group 4 was topped by West Wales Girls on eight points, one ahead of Kidlington Youth who piped Thornhill Athletic on goal difference to finish second. Spitfire's 'Red' came fourth with five points and Swindon Town brought up the rear.
The quarterfinals saw Spitfires 'Blue' go out to Mardy Tigers on penalties, Cadbury Heath beat Abertysswg Angels, Salisbury lost to Kidlington and West Wales beat Port Talbot. In the semi-finals Kidlington beat Mardy Tigers and Cadbury Heath beat West Wales, and in the final Cadbury Heath beat Kidlington 2-0.
Under 12's Winners: Cadbury Heath.
Under 14's With three teams dropping out the under 14's competition ran with 17 teams. Group 1 was won by Spitfires 'A' with Chippenham Town second on goal difference ahead of Crickhowell Panthers 'Blacks'. Bloxham filled the last place.
In Group 2 Bradford Town came top with seven points, one ahead of Crickhowell 'Silvers'. Cholsey Bluebirds came third on three points followed by Wootton Bassett.
Group 3 saw Gloucester City finish ahead of Tower Hill on goal difference, both having six points. Kidlington Youth were third, two points behind, followed by Abertysswg Angels.
Group 4 was the only one not effected by teams dropping out, Mardy Tigers came top with a maximum twelve points and Devizes Town second on seven, one ahead of Coed Cae Colts. Spitfires' 'B' came fourth, and Isle of Wight Girls fifth.
In the quarterfinals Crickhowell Panthers beat Spitfires 'A' on penalties, Bradford Town saw off Chippenham Town, Gloucester beat Devizes and Mardy Tigers triumphed over Tower Hill. The semi-finals saw wins for Gloucester over Crickhowell and Bradford over Mardy, leaving Bradford Town to beat Gloucester City 2-0 in the final.
Under 14's Winners: Bradford Town Youth.
Under 15's Group 1 saw South Reading Vixens secure the maximum twelve points, three ahead of Salisbury City. Spitfires 'A' came third on six points followed by Maidenhead Girls and then Carterton 'B'.
In Group 2 Downend Flyers topped it with fifteen points followed by Benson United on ten. Spitfires 'B' came third with six, one ahead of Slough Youth. Carterton 'A' finished fifth and Milton United sixth.
The semi-final saw Downend progress by 2-0 over Salisbury and South Reading beat Benson 4-0. In the final a close game ended 1-1 after extra-time, Downend winning 3-1 on penalties against South Reading.
Under 15's Winners: Downend Flyers.
Under 16's With no teams dropping out this ran as two groups of six. Port Talbot CYP 'B' came top with eleven points, one ahead of Gloucester City who just edged out West Bromwich Albion 'A' on goal difference. Tilehurst Panthers came fourth on six points followed by Derry Hill United and Crusaders 'B'.
In Group 2 Port Talbot CYP 'A' finished top with twelve points and Isle of Wight Girls were second, one point behind. West Bromwich Albion 'B' came third with seven points and Crusaders 'A' were fourth. Maidenhead Girls and Swindon Spitfires filled the last two places.
In the semi-finals Port Talbot 'B' beat the Isle of Wight and Gloucester beat Port Talbot 'A'. Gloucester City then won the final 2-0 over port Talbot 'B''.
Under 16's Winners: Gloucester City
Ladies Twenty-eight teams contested the Ladies trophy, split into five groups. Group 1 was won by Reading Royals on thirteen points and Chippenham Town 'Blues' came second on eleven. Spitfires 'B' were third on eight points and then came Andover New Street, Fry Club Ladies and Oxford United 'A'.
Group 2 saw Riverside Strikers top on nine points, ahead of Gloucester City on goal difference. Frome Town 'A' came third with eight points above Salisbury City 'A' on goal difference. Banbury United finished on seven points and Spitfires 'C' came last.
In Group 3 Swindon Town Ladies secured the maximum fifteen points, three ahead of Portsmouth. Bath City came third with seven points followed by Chippenham Town 'White', Salisbury City 'B' and Laverstock and Ford who failed to attend.
Group 4 was won by Frome Town 'B' with thirteen points, three ahead of Tiryberth Ladies. Purton were third on six points, Oldland Abbotonians one point behind and then Tetbury Town and University of Bristol 'A'.
In Group 5 hosts Swindon Spitfires 'A' topped it with eleven points, but only on goal difference from Oxford United 'B'. Reading Girls were third on eight points followed by University of Bristol 'B', Cheltenham Town and Fry Club 'A'.
With the group winners progressing to the quarterfinals a play-off between the runners' up and best overall third placed team was held to fill the remaining slots. Tiryberth Ladies beat Oxford United 2-1 on penalties, Portsmouth beat Reading Girls 1-0 and Chippenham Town beat Gloucester City 2-0 on penalties.
The quarter finals saw Reading Royals go down 4-1 to Riverside Strikers, Tiryberth lost 1-0 to Swindon Town, Portsmouth beat From Town 'B' 1-0 and Chippenham edged Spitfires 'A' out by 3-2.
In the semi-final Swindon Town beat Riverside Strikers 1-0 and Portsmouth won on penalties against Chippenham. In a close final Swindon Town scored the only goal to secure a win over Portsmouth.

Spitfires' 2006 6-a-side Tournament
Spitfires held their annual 6-a-side tournament over the weekend of the 17th and 18th June 2006 with over 100 teams taking part.

Under 8’s. The under 8’s festival involved 3 teams, Carterton Girls, Swindon Spitfires and St Nicholas. Each team played each other once, no scores were kept, and everyone who took part received a small memento.
Under 10’s. The under 10’s consisted of 3 groups of 6, with the winners of each group, plus the best runner up progressing to the final. Group 1 saw Mardy Tigers progress to the semi finals with 15 maximum points, 2nd placed Westwood Diamonds also progressed to the semi final as best runners up with 12 points.
Group 2 saw Cadbury Heath progress to the semi final with 15 maximum points.
Group 3 saw Swindon Spitfires ‘B’ top a very close group with 3 teams finishing on 11 points, Spitfires winning the group on goal difference.
In the semi final Mardy Tigers beat Swindon Spitfires 1 – 0 and Cadbury Heath beat West Diamonds 3 -1. In a close fought final Mardy Tigers lost 3 – 2 to Cadbury Heath.
Under 10’s Winners: Cadbury Heath.
Under 12’s. The under 12’s consisted of 4 groups of 5, with the top two progressing to the Q/finals. Group 1 was won by Wycombe Wanderers with 10 points, runners up Mardy Tigers with 9.
Group 2 was won by Gloucester City with 10 points, runners up Cadbury Heath with 7 points.
Group 3 was won by Kidlington with 12 points, runners up Clevedon Town with 7 points.
Group 4 was won by Crickhowell with 12 points, runners up St Nicholas with 9 points.
In the Quarter finals Cadbury Heath beat Wycombe Wanderers 1 – 0, Mardy Tigers beat Gloucester City 1 – 0, Crickhowell Panthers beat Clevedon 2 – 0 and Kidlington beat St Nicholas 2 – 0 on penalties after their match finished goal less.
In the semi finals Mardy Tigers beat Crickhowell Panthers 2 – 0 and Cadbury Heath beat Kidlington on penalties after a goal less draw. In a close fought final Cadbury Heath beat Mardy Tigers on penalties 3 – 2, after a goal less draw.
Under 12’s Winners: Cadbury Heath.
Under 14’s. The under 14’s consisted of 4 groups of 6, with the top two progressing to the Q/finals. Group 1 was won by South Reading with 10 points, runners up Downend Flyers with 10 points.
Group 2 was won by Gloucester City with 11 points, runners up St Nicholas ‘B’.
Group 3 was won by St Nicholas ‘A’ with 13 points, runners up Wycombe Wanderers with 11 points.
Group 4 was won by Clevedon ‘A’ with 15 points, runners up Chippenham Town with 10 points.
In the Q/finals South Reading beat St Nicholas ‘B’ 2 – 0, Gloucester City beat Downend Flyers 3 - 0, St Nicholas ‘A’ beat Chippenham 3 – 0 and after a goal less draw, Clevedon Town beat Wycombe Wanderers 2 – 1 on penalties.
In the semi finals Gloucester City beat Clevedon Town ‘A’ 2 – 0 and South Reading beat St Nicholas 3 – 2 on penalties after a goal less draw. In the final South Reading beat Gloucester City 2 -0.
Under 14’s Winners: South Reading.
Under 16’s. The under 16’s was to have 10 teams, but due to the late withdrawal of two teams, the programme had to be revised to consist of 2 groups of 4. Group 1 was won by Swindon Town with 5 points, 2nd Reading Girls with 5 points, 3rd West Brom 'B' with 5 points and Swindon Spitfires with no points.
Group 2 was won by West Brom ‘A’, 2nd Yeovil Town, 3rd Downend Flyers, and 4th Southampton Saints.
To give all teams an extra game Q/finals were held. Swindon Town beat Southampton Saints 2 – 1, West Brom ‘A’ beat Swindon Spitfires 2 – 0, Reading beat Downend 2 – 1 and West Brom ‘B’ beat Yeovil Town 3 – 2.
In the semi finals Reading beat Swindon Town and West Brom ‘A’ beat West Brom ‘B’. In the final West Brom ‘A’ beat Reading Girls.
Under 16’s winners: West Bromwich Albion ‘A’.
Senior Ladies. The seniors consisted of 5 groups of 6, with the top team from each group plus the 3 best runners up progressing to the Q/finals. Group 1 was won by Riverside Strikers with 15 points, 2nd Poole Town with 10 points.
Group 2 was won by Swindon Town ‘A’ with 9 points.
Group 3 was won by Swindon Spitfires ‘B’ with 11 points.
Group 4 was won by Salisbury City ‘B’ with Gloucester City 2nd with 10 points.
Group 5 had joint winners Chippenham Town ‘A’ and Laverstock and Ford, both finishing with 11 points.
In the Q/finals Riverside Strikers beat Poole Town 1 – 0, Swindon Spitfires ‘B’ beat Swindon Town ‘A’ 1 – 0, Gloucester City beat Salisbury City 2 – 1 and after a 2 – 2 draw Chippenham beat Laverstock and Ford 4 – 3 on penalties.
In the S/Final Riverside beat Chippenham Town 1 – 0 and after a goal less draw, Swindon Spitfires ‘B’ beat Gloucester City 4 – 3 on penalties. In the final Riverside Strikers beat Swindon Spitfires ‘B’ 3 – 0.
Senior Winners: Riverside Strikers.

Swindon Spitfires ran what was hopefully an enjoyable and successful tournament over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd July 2005.
