History and Captains of Supermarine Bowls Club
Supermarine Bowls Club was formed in 1947 under the name of Vickers Sports & Social Club. Changed name to Supermarine Sports & Social Club in 1985. This was after the Supermarine Spitfire built by Vickers Armstrong. We are a private members club and in 2004 we purchased our own green and clubhouse,thanks to the generosity of its members, and help from the English Bowling Association.(Now known as Bowls England) The club completes in two leagues, Swindon & District, and Wiltshire Bowls Association. Supermarine Bowls Club have won the Swindon & District League 3 times. In the year 2002 members of Wills Bowls Club joined us and we now have two teams in the S&D League's and one team in the Wiltshire League. For afternoon bowlers we have three teams in the S&D Afternon League.Also we will have a ladies Section of about 20 ladies running one team in the evening league,and one in the afternoon league. The Ladies Captain for this year 2012 is Mrs Marilyn Kilburn and Club Captain is Mick Kilburn. We have extended our clubhouse by building new changing rooms and extended and refitted the kitchen. we now have full toilet facilities,along with ramp access for disabled persons, to the clubhouse. This club has a great atmosphere, and every year we have a Memorial Day Competition to raise money for the Prospect Foundation. Which will be held this year on June 26th starting at 10am. We are having an OPENDAY on Saturday 14th April 2012 starting at 1-30pm. This is open to any person to visit us and try the great game of bowls, all ages welcome. Do not sit in front of the TV on a nice afternoon come and visit us, better still why not join us. and make new friends. We will give you a very warm welcome. If your new to the game of bowls and join our club, your first years membership is free, Bowls woods of all sizes available for you to use on this afternoon, just wear flat shoes. |
