The season so far !!
20 April 2001 Durham (away) The Civil Service fantasy league team recently took the place of Gloucester in the County Championship. Game one was an enthralling encounter with Durham. The Geordies made 224 in their 1st innings, with the only notable score coming from Jon DaleyDeroux was the pick of the bowlers with 6- 42. The Service then made a fairly dismal start to their batting campaign with much of the top order failing notably Welch for 2. Yet the tail wagged and a record last wicket stand between man of the match Deroux and Dickinson saw Service pile on 344. 4 wickets a piece for Mildenhall and Mabberley ensured that the team from Swindon only required 58 for victory in their 2nd innings which was easily achieved. There are one day matches going on but these will not be reported in detail, however I will mention Welch's 103 not out angainst Leicestershire in the Sunday championship. |
Wufnell is a tanker
9 May 2001 Middlesex home
The Civil Service entertained Middlesex in their first home game of the season. With conditions looking good for batting Giddings duely won the toss and batted. A solid 63 from him and 76 from Gerry Meale saw the home side to a respectable 316 all out. Middlesex could only muster 254 in reply with Welch bowling superbly ending with figures of 7-65. A barnstorming 137 career best from Hayward in the second inningssaw the sevice pile on a massive 377, Tufnell the only bowler of note with 5 wickets. Smart bowling particularly from Dickinson (3-15) saw the visitors dismissed for 110 and victory was ensured.

Dickinson for England
16 May 2001 Hampshire away
Hampshire piled on 349 in their first innings. Mildenhall took 4 for 80, but the rest of the bowlers lookied tired from their super cup exploits. However the batsmen responded. Welch continued his rich vein of form with 75 before the tail wagged yet again. Mildenhall also recorded 75 but the most surprising performance came from Dickinson who hit 91 not out off as many deliveries. In reply Hampshire could again only muster 267 and the service duely knocked off the 100 odd runs required for the loss of 4 wickets. |

We all live in a Welch Wonderland
25 May 2001 Worcestershire home
The service were put in on an overcast grey morning, the kind of morning the makes you wonder why we travel the country playing cricket 6 days a week. Cunningham returning to the team for the surprisingly injured Meale (2 weeks, leg) made an encouraging 67. However h found little support from teammates besides the impressive Spackman who put on 78 to bring the total to 306 all out. Worcester's impressive batsman breezed past this and made 358 all out. Mabberley picked up 4 although Mildenhall was reponsible for the crucial wickets of Hick and Solanki. The second innings saw Welch come into his own ably supported by Hayward. When the home side declared on 394 - 2 Welch was 183 no and Hayward 105 no. Giddings contributed a miserly 70. However it seemed that welch and Hayward were enjoying themselves too much and forgot to declare in time leaving only 2 and a half sessions to bowl out the visitors. The bowlers weren't up to it and the match was drawn. The service are currently second in the table. Hayward is third in the overall batting averages with an average of 84.75. Welch is 18th just behind Irani and Jamie Law on 54.83.

Service bounce back after defeat to Scots!!
A humiliating 30 run loss to Scotland in the C+G cup third round was nough to see some changes in the Service team for the forthcoming championship match against Warwaickshire. Money was out and Summer signing Clive Gill made his debut batting at number 4. Deroux and Mildenhall bowled beautifullt reducing Warwicks to 164 all out. The Swindon side then put on a mammoth total of 564. Hayward made 141 with Gill 96 on debut. A promising start, will Money get nack in the side? Mabberley added 49 and Dickinson 88. Dickinson continued his form with the ball taking 6 wickets and bowling out Warwickshire for 274.

Mixed feelings at the club
There were mixed feelings at the Service today as the teram slumped to their first county championship defeat of the season losing to Sussex but 73 runs. However spirits were soon raised as the only player to make any impression in that match, Martin Spackman, was called up to the England squad. Yes there amongst the names of Hick and Ramprakash was Spackman so the Service have an international star. Who will be next?? |
