A Short History of The 4th Battalion in WW2 - 1944/45
After arriving in Normandy, France, around the 23rd June 1944 as part of the 129 Brigade of the 43rd Wessex Division, the 4th Battalion saw action at St. Manview-Cheux-Hill 112-Chateau
Fontaine-Maltot and Mt. Pincon and the River Seine Crossing at Vernon. September they took part in Market Garden and fought on the Island between Nijmegen and Arnhem at Oosterout and Elst. Further action was in Germany at
Geilenkirchen-Cleeve-Goch and the Reichswald Forest and the crossing of the Rhine at Rees. It was back into Holland and on the 1st April 1945 they helped with the liberation of Lochem,
before going back into Germany for the Battle of Bremen. With the war now in it’s final days they were at Bergen Belsen. The Battalion continued after the war as a TA battalion but was disbanded in 1967. |
