DISTRACTION BURGLARIES
Yet again, I have to warn you of further distraction type burglary offences that have occurred in the Warminster and Westbury areas.
The following methods have been used: bogus Water Board officials, persons indicating that there has been a fire at or near the address and that the occupants needed to evacuate their house immediately.
The most recent ploy is where persons are knocking on doors, stating that they are selling plants and then subsequently pressuring the occupiers to gain access to the house. Nearly all of the victims are aged between 70-90 years, and most would appear to be female.
Could I ask you, where possible, to check on any elderly neighbours and reinforce the message that no-one without identification should be allowed into your house.
Remember Call-A-Friend and if anyone needs advice regarding crime prevention, the "Wiltshire Bobby Van Scheme" can be of assistance to you.
Just remember, if in doubt, make someone wait outside and dial ‘999’. If they are genuine, they won’t mind waiting.
SHED BURGLARIES
A burglary occurred in February at an address in Bread Street, where the shed was entered and a large quantity of fishing gear was stolen, most of the items being Shimano in make.
Can I remind you to secure your outbuildings and again, if you need advice on security, you can contact Mark Abbott who is the Crime Prevention Officer at Melksham.
If anyone has any information as to who is responsible for this offence, please contact your local Police, or CrimeStoppers on 0800-555-111.
DRUGS
A Warminster male has recently been arrested having been found in possession of a large quantity of Ecstasy tablets. It is believed he was supplying the drugs from his car.
The activity was noticed and reported to the Police and as a result, as outlined above, he was arrested and is waiting to appear before local Magistrates.
The vast majority of information received by the Police from the public relates to drugs and should you have any information or suspicions, please contact the Police or CrimeStoppers, as the matter will be dealt with confidentially and treated appropriately.
May I take this opportunity also to reassure that Warminster is a small town and those dealing in drugs are known to the Police and actively targeted. The town is no worse than any other of equivalent size for the availability of drugs and pro-active operations are carried out on a monthly basis to tackle this issue.
It is reported that there is a drug problem in Westbury, despite recent well publicised successes.
Several operations are planned over the coming months, again on well-known drug users/dealers, and we are hopeful of similar successes and similar terms of imprisonment for any offenders.
Again, you can leave any information regarding drugs or any crime anonymously with CrimeStoppers.
