Wroughton was designed as an Aircraft Storage Unit. Land was purchased by compulsory purchase order in 1938, Holloway Bros (Millbank) began construction began in May 1939. Farm buildings were demolished and a disused chalk quarry was filled in. Many dispersed hangars were provided to minimize bombing targets for the enemy. The airfield officially opened on 1 April 1940. Units serving at RAF Wroughton were 15 MU 1940 – 1972 76 MU 1941 – 1946 Glider Test & Ferry Flight 1943 – 1945 41 Gp Test Pilot Pool 1958 -1959
The airfield was handed over to the Royal Navy as RN Aircraft Yard Wroughton in April 1972 and remained with them until September 1992. Storage and repair of helicopters for all three services took place there.
The Science Museum took over the site in 1979, storing aircraft and other large objects in the hangars. |
