World War 1 Memorial
 | The Jubilee Lodge of "The Buffs" erected this plaque after World War 1.
It was sited in a public house in Devizes where the lodge held it’s meetings, as a dedication to four lodge members who were killed while serving with the Army during the Great War of 1914-18. The lodge closed many years later owing to a lack of members.
About sixty-five years after the plaque was originally erected, the public house was renovated and the plaque removed. A local undertaker saved the plaque from destruction.
In a joint project between the Wiltshire Historical Military Society and The Friends of War Memorials, the marble plaque was repaired and re-sited in the St. John's Ambulance County Headquarters, Devizes.
At a ceremony on Remembrance Sunday - 11th November 2001, Lt.General Sir Maurice Johnston, KCB, OBE, Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire carried out the unveiling. |
