The first season under the badge of the Yew Tree Rangers , could not have got off to a better start, for Player Manager Js Glasson. After a good pre-season run of friendlies which saw them look a formidble side. and a cup game exit against premier league champions Elm Tree Sports . The Yews promptly make thier mark in the re-instated Division two of the FROME & dISTRICT SUNDAY LEAGUE, after a influx of nine new teams. The Yews first game was against ASDA FC who were beaten 6-2 in a one sided game. Striker John Burns putting away a hat-trick before defender Nigel Chantly was sent off for foul language. ten man rangers then added three more ,Stuart Green , Mark davies and Chris Davis finishing of the rout. Trowbridge athletic were next to fall to the charge of the Yews as they lost 3-2, this was the Yews second visit to Gypsy lane which is a good hunting ground for the warminster side.Chris Davis, mark davies and john burns scored the goals while Keeper Stuart Miligin was rushed to hospital for precauntionary measures after falling awkwardly. Two weeks later the Yews were back at Gypsy lane to face Royal oak,drawing 4-4. this was a evenly matched game with both teams direct attacking formations making it a fastopen game. royal oak opened the scoring after a minute but goals from Glasson, chris davis, rob jacques and Burns kept them in the game. royal oak drew a minute from time to halt the Yews third win on the bounce.Rangers first game at home was agaisnt Team Frome who ran out 4-1 winners. the visitors were to strong and a consolation penalty from Chris Davis was all that the home side could offer. Bottomed placed Norton Nomads were the next side to visit St georges fields, and they lost 3-1 against a reshuffled homeside. Nigel Chantly, Mark davies and john burns scoring the goals. This result kept them third in the league. but the league was already shaping up with, the next opponents Withiam Friary already destined for promotion and they went away 10-1 winners. Andy pringles first goal coming as a late consolation.
Rangers then bounced back in a divisional cup game. a home tie against Ac Mee lamb, another favorite to go up. This was the yews best performance ,even tho they lost to the Lambs seventh minute goal.the 0-1 scoreline gave no justice to the home side and showed signs that the side were beginning to gel and play football. it was to be shortlived as
injuries and bans ,depleted Glassons side as they went to White city, home of Norton Nomads. Ten Man rangers lost 5-3 with kEVIN bLISSETT, Burns and Mark Davies keeping the visitors in the game. Rangers then bounced back doing the double over ASDA FC. Blissett grabbing his second in two games and Chris davis making 2-1. Ac Mee-lamb followed, but the Yews Two early goals prompted the lamb into a second half fightback and they won 5-2.
Two draws followed a 1-1 with Permaframe and 2-2 with Paulton milan in two lack luste games before losing 2-0 at home to Paulton milan in a cup game. A bare eleven then faced Withian Friary away and it was an even stiffer task when skipper Chris Hancock went off injured and out for the season. however a strong defensive line saw ten man rangers keep the scoreline down to 3-0. Paulton milan then strolled thier home hame by beating the yews 4-0. a two week break saw a revitalised rangers beat Trowbridge 3-0 at home. keeping them well bedded at the bottom of the table. Rangers returned to gypsy lane with a patched up side and lost 4-0 to royal oak. Permaframe were next to take all three points off the yews who were now at a low. winning 1-0 . Rangers then played out thier last two games losing 4-0 to team frome and then ending the season on a 7-1 thrashing by runners up AC Milan.
The YEWS then had to wait on other results before finishing sixth in the league. Withiam Friary had been favorites to get promoted and they did it in style, while the runner up spot was between AC MILAN and Team Frome. a late charge by Royal Oak came to late. The Yews Manager's Prediction off Promotion was short lived after thier early peak. While the teams in the bottom half ofthe division having had a season under thier belt will be a lot stronger. |
