Sometimes !! well most times this season for the Yews if things aint going right for you they never will. The Yews can look back at themselves and pat themselves on the back , they didnt deserve to lose this match, espically from a 20 yard grass cutter which bobbled under a full stretched Alex Makwana in the Yews goal, who for much of the sixty minutes had been a mere spectator. The Goal definatly spiced the game up and Makwana had to pull off two more superb saves before the match finished.
The Yews first game of 2007 and the first for eight weeks looked a good time to reverse the Yews Fortunes and could have been different if some absent players were more committed to the club than to themselves.Player boss JS Glasson put out a familiar line-up with a few changes and it seemed to work once the game progressed.
The visitors won the toss and opted to kick downhill and started at a pace.Griffen were forced to defend deep with thier keeper who was thier best player commanding his area and snuffing out any threat. for the first half hr the yews chipped away at a frantic pace chances from rory kelly, mike payne gping wide. Mike Payne did have the ball in the net on 36 minutes but was flagged offside and then again on 40 minutes when his goal was dissallowed for a offside decsion on stuart green.Griffen were far from poor, they defended well as a unit and in numbers and when they settled they started edging up the field. a few corners and free kicks rarely threatened, but they were enough to give the Yews a shake up.
The homeside restarted the match after the break a much urgent side and the game became end to end with chances wasted at both end in the first ten minutes, both defences soaking up the pressures. Martin Read felt the full force of a block tackle and was soon replaced by polishman Gregor Byjion who only knows one position and thats "onfield". Griffen broke the stalemate on 66 minutes after the yews failed to clear a bouncing ball, and a lucky grasscuttering bobbling rocket shot from twenty yards bobbled unkindly for the yew keeper.Griffen should have gone two up ten minutes later but Makwana fingertip save tipped it over the right post for a corner. The Yews desperate for a equaliser foraged foward and mike payne was unlucky with a snapshot volley and was smothered two minutes later four yards out. Nigel chantly header went wide from a corner in the last few minutes.final score 1-0
