St George triumphs in Ashton under Hill!

Members of Ashton Players performed a traditional Mummers' play for a lively and appreciative audience at the St George's Day dinner in the Village Hall on Saturday April 26th 2003.

Saint George (John Beach) and Captain Slasher (Louise Beach) defended the King of England (Phil Dolan) from a barbarous attack by the Turkish Champion (Leo Enright).

Saint George was tragically slain, but was quickly brought back to life by the ministrations of the Doctor (Marion Nelson). Our very own musical Clown (David Ward) opened and closed the proceedings while Beelzebub (Malcolm Nelson) moved amongst the audience collecting for the local branch of the Samaritans.

The play was also performed several times during the Ashton Open Gardens weekend in June and at the Dumbleton Fete in August 2003. Village traditions in the making!
