David Lloyd Centre I (Bromsgrove) v Boughton Park

Boughton Park kicked off their new season away to David Lloyd 1 Bromsgrove on Wednesday, October 15.
The team got away to a terrible start with Greg Edwards and Ray Burrows both losing quickly and easily, Greg going down 9-4, 9-5, 9-5 to Brian Castle and Ray being steamrollered by Stuart Franklin 9-7, 9-2, 9-5.
It was left to Colin Adams to show the Boughton flag, putting in a sterling performance (better than any last season!) against Chris Jones, saving match points before winning 10-8, 7-9, 4-9, 9-5, 10-8.
Roger Cale, still suffereing from (amongst other things) a cracked rib, lost comfortably to Allen Benbow 9-2, 9-4, 9-3.
Our own Chris Jones found Lewis Jones (what a dead common name!) too hot to live with, losing the first two games 9-2, 9-1 and going over on his ankle early in the third game and retiring to the bar. The next day it was bothering him enough to go to A+E and it looks as if he will be out for a few weeks.
Boughton 3pts David Lloyd 19pts.
Man of the match Colin Adams.

Malvern II v Boughton Park

Boughton Park played their second Worcestershire League Division Four fixture of the season away to Malvern Squash Club on Wednesday, October 22.
Weakened by injury to Chris Jones, we were still hopeful of a good performance, with Alan Hard-wick coming in to play his first match in recent years. He and Greg Edwards were first on court and neither of them really got going, finding the away courts and the tricky play of David Watson and Hugh Webber too much for them, Alan losing 9-4, 9-0, 9-6 and Greg suffering the same fate 9-0, 9-3, 9-4.
Next on court were Colin Adams and Ray Burrows. Colin couldn't sustain the brilliant form of last week, losing quickly to Mark Read 9-3, 9-3, 9-1. This week it was Ray's turn to put in a sterling performance, gallantly winning through against Boughton defector Steve Gains, 9-5, 5-9, 9-3, 9-1.
Last to play was Roger Cale against Guy Rutter. This produced the best squash of the evening, marred by Roger questioning some decisions in his usual less than subtle way! Guy ran out the winner, 9-3, 9-10, 9-2, 9-2.
Afterwards we ended up nearly in Gloucester at the Plume of Feathers and had a nice meal including a pudding! The food, beer and hospitality was much appreciated.
Malvern 18pts, Boughton Park 4pts.
Man of the match was Ray Burrows.

Boughton Park v Manor Park III

Boughton Park played host to Malvern-based Manor Park III on Wednesday, October 29.
Jimmy Allen, making his seasonal debut, got the home team off to a flying start, comfortably disposing of Colin Dukes 9-1, 9-2, 9-4. Meanwhile Greg Edwards was struggling to live with the youthful Adam Oakley. Greg won the first game 9-6 but Adam's youthful exuberance wore Greg down, and Adam won the next three games 9-5, 9-3, 9-7.
Next on court were Ray Burrows playing Trevor Hudson and Martin Hatt (also making his seasonal debut after injury) playing Steve Carter. Ray cruised into an 8-2 lead in the first game only to lose the next eight points and the first game! However, he powered throught the next three games 9-3, 9-3, 9-2 with Trevor suffering from heat exhaustion (apparently our courts are hotter than those Trevor has played in South Africa!) Martin had a titanic struggle with Steve but the lack of games told on him in the end and he went down 9-0, 8-10, 2-9, 9-10.
It was left to Colin Adams, suffering from vertigo playing so high up the rankings (Roger Cale was out celebrating a birthday!) to play the deciding rubber and he struggled to make any headway against Bill Munn, losing 9-3, 9-2 10-8. to give a match result of Manor Park 15 pts Boughton 8pts.
Man of the match was a close call - Ray had another fine win but Jimmy just edged it for clinically winning 3-0.
