Here it comes.....
Information sheet for prospective members
“Bromsgrove and Redditch Friends” is a social group for unattached people which was formed in 1989 and which is based in the Redditch/Bromsgrove area of Worcestershire. We meet every Tuesday evening at local pubs as detailed in our current programme of events and we also have a wide range of social activities, both in and out of doors. For example, activities which tend to distract us from the everyday treadmill of life have been known to include cinema, theatre, 10-pin bowling, country walks, weekends away, discos, meals out, take-aways, games nights, ceilidh, skittles, quizzes, horse riding, boating, concerts and lots more …. Gosh, no wonder we're always exhausted.
You are welcome to attend the Tuesday pub nights and the events on the programme for one month before deciding if you wish to become a member. It is a condition of membership that prospective members agree to comply with the provisions of the group’s constitution, a copy of which will be given to you on enrolment. Any personal information you supply (address, telephone number etc.) will be treated as confidential and will not be divulged beyond the committee without your permission. Most members are happy for their telephone number to be printed in the programme if they are organising an event, but we do recognise that you may prefer not to advertise your number widely.
Most of the events on the programme are organised by the members. There is no commitment for individual members to organise events, but obviously the group runs more smoothly if there is a sufficiency of people willing to contribute. Some events are very simple and easy to arrange – a visit to a pub to see a live band for example. Others require more organisation, like canoeing trips and dinner dances. We are affiliated to and share some events with other Friends groups in the Solihull and Worcester areas. These organisations are run on similar (but not identical) lines to our own.
A committee of members is responsible for the day to day running of the group and is elected annually by the membership. The names and telephone numbers of some of the Committee members are listed on the monthly programme. We hope that you will come and join us and enclose a copy of our current programme to show you what’s happening this month. If you would like to find out more, please give one of us a ring or just turn up at one of our pub nights from about 9:00pm.
The group is non-profit making but does require that members pay an annual subscription (currently £ 30). The money is used to pay for advertising, stationery, postage and other reasonable expenditure in support of the group’s objectives. Occasionally, if funds allow, the committee decides that an event can be subsidised by the group, thus enabling participating members to get some of their hard earned money back.
It can be very difficult for a newcomer to feel completely at home socialising with a group of strangers, particularly on the first night. You may find that everyone seems to know one another, and it may not be easy to strike up conversation under such circumstances. Committee members are there partly to help new people like yourself get through these early days, we do encourage you to give it a try and hope that after a few weeks you will decide that it was worth the effort.
