THE HISTORIC KIDDERMINSTER PROJECT was initiated in 2006 to create a record of buildings and important sites in KIDDERMINSTER. It was developed jointly between the Kidderminster Civic Society and the Worcestershire County Council Historic Environment and Archaeology Service and funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund. The initiative is administered by the Project Committee and the Archaeology Service and supported by a number of active volunteers (many of whom are members of the Kidderminster & District Archaeological & Historical Society).
Part of the funding obtained was to provide for a radar survey of ST MARY'S CHURCHYARD in order to ascertain if there is any evidence for the SAXON MONASTERY believed to have once existed in the Kidderminster area. That survey has now been carried out and some evidence of underground structures in the churchyard have been revealed. The Geophysics workers (of Channel Four's 'Time Team' fame) described these results as 'exciting'.
Volunteers to help with the work of recording buildings are very welcome. We would also be interested to hear about any historical information about the town and buildings particularly, but not exclusively, with regard to the 19th Century. If anyone has original or copies of old DEEDS, MAPS OR PHOTOGRAPHS we would find it most useful if we were permitted to examine them.
