The History of St Johns Players
St Johns Players were founded in 1949 by a small group of enthusiastic amateur actors. They were originally formed in the St John's area of Worcester but for many years have been based in Claines and Barbourne.
Since its inception the Group has performed in a number of venues. Initially these were mainly in schools and church halls, but since the building of The Swan Theatre in the mid nineteen sixties, one production a year has always been performed there.
Originally all productions were staged in Worcester, but for a considerable number of years we have expanded our area to perform in Droitwich and Bromyard as well. A range of venues has enabled us to produce a variety of plays to suit the location. For several years we have performed at the Worcester Arts Workshop, which has given us the opportunity to stage plays more suitable to a studio audience.
Traditionally we have staged our Swan Theatre priduction in the Spring or early Summer as part of the amateur season. Fortunately new management at the theatre has allowed us greater flexibility of choice, so we are looking towards the Autumn in future. |
