The Magnificent Seven

At the Clubs 2003 AGM the members took the decision to change the direction that the club was going in. To add to the midweek and friendly bowling also to become a rink bowling club.

In September 2003 work began on improving the green and its surrounds to bring it up to the standard required.

Seven able bodied men, hearty and true and of sound mind (? well some of them) took it upon themselves to complete the work. Abily assisted by other club members to numerous to mention (but they know who they are) the work began.

Club member Gordon Handy took a pictorial record of how the work progressed and here are just a few of his pictures. Big thanks to Gordon for letting me use them on here, and an even bigger thanks to the seven, without whose time and effort, none of this would have been possible

September 2003

Work started in July 2003 and continued in September after the green had closed. Some work had been done through the season, but the majority of the work was completed throught the winter.

They started by removing the tree roots from the far end of the green. This was quickly followed by the preparation of the playing surface for 2004 coring and topdressing the surface.

The foundations of the banks went in next followed by concrete blocks and then coping stones. The face of the banks was clad with plywood and Green astro turf.

A new watering system followed.

Then began the task of paving the whole area around the green. This work has been ongoing and was completed in January 2005.

In 2004 the Club secured a £5000 awards for all lottery grant which has allowed us to purchase and modify modular buildings into changing rooms for Club members and visitors. This work has been ongoing since July 2004 and is almost complete.

The next job tackled was the entrance drive to the club which was extremely overgrown. This is now completely clear and a new fence erected, leaving space to park a few more cars.

The next challenge is to extend or replace the Clubhouse to provide indoor winter ameneties.
