New store the answer

WHY is there a planning application being considered for housing on the Kidderminster Road next to DFS? The site should be retained for retail, as it is an integral part of the existing retail already there. It is the only site available in Droitwich, it should be reconsidered for a large food store and petrol filling station. The food shopping scene in the town is now worse than it was ten years ago, despite the population having risen considerably. Most of the retail food shopping is done at Worcester, Bromsgrove or Kidderminster, because these towns have stores large enough to facilitate the range and variety demanded by today's shopping public. A superstore situated on the land adjacent to DFS etc would be within easy walking distance of the Westlands estate. This would address the 70 per cent leakage of shoppers from the town and would attract people to Droitwich with a good percentage continuing on into the town centre. Droitwich can only gain by having a new store, both by producing jobs and by providing the people with the calibre of store they want and deserve. Shopkeepers in High Street and the town centre would experience a rebirth, as new custom would be attracted to their shops and give confidence to others and encourage them to look beyond fast food and hairdressing in High Street. It is now time the voice of the shopping public of Droitwich was heard. For too long, the only voices to be heard have been those of the few opposed to progress purely for their own ends. Please now, Droitwich, start fighting back and let your voice be heard. Dilys Moy |
