Malvern win nailbiter
In a repeat of last year's final, Malvern won a close round 1 match at Droitwich.
Maurice Ginger won quickly on board 4 to give Malvern the lead. This was followed by a well fought draw on board 1. The middle two boards went the full distance. On board 2, both sides were able to promote pawns in the endgame, but Dave Adshead found a mating net to level the scores. On board 3, Geoffrey Herbert had a small advantage for a large part of the game and was eventually able to breach the defences in a time scramble to give Malvern victory.

Redditch sneek past the Pawns
Redditch played away to Kidderminster Pawns in 1st round of the K.O. The match was played in a very good spirit and with a 1.5 head start it was always going to be tough for the home side even though Redditch were heavily out graded.

After a hard fought match Kidderminster made it through to the final with a victory over this years Div 2 champions.All 4 boards were hard fought games but it was a little to much of an ask for Redditch to beat such a good side as Kidderminster.

Final Victory
Kidderminster Knights completed their season by winning the Worcester & District Knockout final 4 - 0 against Kidderminster Rooks. The Knights heavily out graded their opponents and although the score line may have looked convincing, there were some close individual games..
Jim was first to score and playing with the white pieces won a piece on move 9 after Bill’s slightly unusual response to Jim’s Scotch Opening. Bill was forced to resign after a few exchanges and Jim secured a very strong Knight on d6 which was supported by 2 passed pawns.
Frank won a Pawn in the opening but then had to defend a backward d pawn. He held onto to Pawn and reached a favourable endgame where Terry eventually resigned.
Board 2 was very close but Maurice made it 3 -0 after giving Paul the problem of doubled isolated Pawns. Maurice then centralised both his Knight’s, won a Pawn and like Frank went on to win the ending.
Last to finish was the battle of the John’s on board 1. John Wrench was White and after gaining a lead in development in a closed Sicilian, sacrificed a Knight on f7. John Varilone took the Knight but to relieve the pressure that followed he responded with a Rook sacrifice to get some play on the King’s side. White was able to hold onto the material advantage, avoid perpetual checks and after many pieces including the Queens were exchanged John Wrench secured the win by pinning John Varilone’s Knight with his Rook.
