Malvern open defence with a win at Redditch

Redditch 0.5 - 3.5 Malvern
1) Giles Stanton 0-1 Geoffrey Herbert
2) Jason Cole 0.5-0.5 Ian Clarke
3) D. Dixon 0-1 Maurice Ginger
4) M. Daniels 0-1 Tony Shaw

Good wins by Maurice Ginger and Tony Shaw on boards 3 and 4 gave Malvern the lead and a rather fortunate win on board 1 gave them the win. Geoffrey blundered a pawn in the early middlegame. He managed to beat off the immediate threats to reach an endgame still a pawn down. Giles left his queen en-pris just after the time control. Giles Stanton prevented a whitewash with a well earned draw.

Knights win again

Kidderminster Knights continued their winning start to the season with a 4 - 0 victory in the match against newly promoted Redditch.

On board 1 John played an unusual line against Jason’s Caro Khan opening with 1. e4 c6, 2. d4 d5, 3. f3 dxe4, 4. fxe4 e5, 5. Nf3 .... This left John with an isolated King Pawn but a lead in development which was followed by an attack which eventually broke through in the centre.

Jim played his favourite line against Giles Ruy Lopez on board 2 and launched a King side attack which proved decisive after a Knight sacrifice.

Maurice’ s game against Michelle on board 3 reached the quick play stage. Michelle held on for a while but was the exchange down and this proved enough for Maurice to force the win.

In the final game, Gerald won a Rook in the middle game following a Queen check. Penny struggled on for some time but the material deficit was to much.

Things looked promising for the pawns in the early stages of the match. Mark Riley won a pawn in the early middlegame and was able to convert this into a well deserved win, his first against Brian Turner.

Board 2 could have gone either way, with both players appearing to have winning attacks at various points in the game. The game was eventually drawn when position repetition was imminent.

Fortunately for Malvern, Peter Yeadon and Tony Shaw were able to retrieve the situation with wins on boards 3 and 4.

St Johns win Division 1 with one match to spare

The recent win by St Johns against Kidder Pawns means that they cannot be denied being Division 1 winners no matter what happens in the final matches.

St Johns would like to thank Malvern in their sportmanship in the top of the table clash on 31 March when a car with three St Johns players on the way to the match broke down. Malvern generously did not stick to the starting times and the game default times to allow the St Johns players not to be penalised.
St Johns had to default a board against a strong Malvern side [the driver of the car had to stay with the car to get the recovery service]. It was Nick Harris who produced an excellent win to ensure a drawn match and what turned out to be a league title winning performance.
